    Default Stanley Cup Playoffs

I know most of you guys could care less but the Stanley Cup playoffs started tonight. Just finished watching the Vancouver Canucks defeat the Dallas Stars in quadruple overtime 5-4. I would have hated to have watched for 5 hours only to see the home team lose.

    Go Canucks Go!

I don't really follow hockey but these aren't the finals, right? I mean...Is it Canucks v Stars for the cup? That would seem...somehow...wrong...

The NHL seriously needs to get a TV contract with a network other than Versus if it expects to pick up more audience here in the US. Aside from what was mentioned here, I seriously don't know which teams contended for the playoffs.

Then again, I don't know much about the NBA playoffs either this year.

doc, I agree with you but the reason ESPN didn't renew their TV deal with the NHL after the lockout was because they were getting better ratings with repeats of the World Series of Poker and stuff like that than the NHL. Which is a shame, because I picked up my love of hockey watching it on ESPN in the 80s (my two most vivid memories being the Caps/Isles 4OT game, and when Jim Schoenfeld told referee Don Koharski to "have another donut you fat pig"). And that was years before my area (northern California) had a modern-day hockey team.

I'm looking forward to several sleepless nights the next month or so, hoping the Sharks get over the hump and win the Cup!

Actually, ESPN did make a bid to keep the TV rights but OLN/Versus outbid them. The NHL was foolish to take the money at the expense of exposure.

FYI, NBC will be broadcasting some games on the weekend in the US.

Yes and no. There were a lot of franchises who were losing money which was the reason for the lockout. The owners were successful in getting a hard salary cap as well as an escrow account in which players pay about 12% of their salaries. Players are repaid their escrow payments only if the the players did not make up their full share of 54% of league revenues. The system is now idiot proof for the owners and all teams are making money.

I can see why the owners went for the money with Versus but I still think it was shortsighted. I think they would have benefited from more exposure on ESPN which would have helped grow the game (especially important after shutting down the league for a year). There was a time in the early/mid-90s when the NHL was more popular than the NBA in the US. How far they have fallen.

I hate to say it but no matter how much the NHL and Gary try to sell hockey in the USA it will never happen. Hockey is just a side sport south of the border.

Right now Americans have only 2 thoughts Baseball and Nascar.....

    Maybe football...

During the finals for Lord Stanley's Cup Americans will be treated to one of our most controversial national treasures DON "GRAPES" CHERRY. He will be side by side with Hull in between periods.

Let me warn Americans before watching...no political correctness from Grapes and you will experience a whole new meaning to WARDROBE MALFUNCTION!!!!

Up here in Canada HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA is our national religious church and duty....hockey is our religion and the greats of the past and present our saints and martyrs....be it Rocket Richard Bobby Orr or Eddie Bauer...the list is impressive!!

Don Cherry and Ron Mc Lean are the "chief priests" of our "religion" with sports broadcasters our regional "clergy".

Hell I swear I have hockey pucks in my blood not blood cells!!!

GO FLAMES GO!!!!! GO FLAMES GO!!!!!! GO FLAMES GO!!!!!

I have to disagree with this a little. There are good hockey markets in the US. The problem is Gary Bettman was more concerned about expanding to TV markets instead of hockey markets.

And this is for you SS...

I just think NCAA hockey is much more interesting. There are so many ways to win and lose.

Hehe. Only reason I know anything about it to know when might be a good time to work. As long as the Suns are in the playoffs it'll bring money to the slow dry summer season here.

That's because we're stuck with the Coyotes.
