Exclamation my front teeth are shifting

my whole life everyone has complimented me on my smile. i've always been self concious about this teensy gap in between my front teeth... although everyone else tells me i'm nuts.

well... here lately, my front teeth have been feeling a little uncomfortable. i examined my teeth, and the gap is getting bigger!

what should i do? would a retainer shove them back into place? i don't know if i am a candidate for veneers, i only need a speck of porcelain to make my teeth look like they did before.

i want this fixed, it's a big deal to me.

    help me

hmm .. I know how u feel. My teeth were magically straight and looked good (my parent's both are a mess!), but a few years ago, my wisdom teeth started to come in and pushed them together. so one of my teeth is kinda turned..but apparently it's only noticeable to me, and it bugs the shit out of me!!

anyways, do you have a retainer? my friend had braces in highschool or middle or something, and she had a retainer from then. somehow her teeth started shifting and her gap started to show, so she put her retainer on all the time when she was at home, driving in the car, sleeping, etc. and she said it hurt at first, but it seemed to fix it. gap is gone, and she no longer uses the retainer. if you don't have one I really don't have any advice for you. but if it's something that bothers you, you SHOULD have it fixed. I know when I save up, I'm fixing that ONE tooth that pisses me off!

i KNEW it was my wisdom teeth's fault.

    i just fucking knew it.

i am pretty sure that if i go to an orthodontist with cash in hand, he won't turn me down for a retainer.

i'm sure none would turn u down .. well my wisdom teeth actually pushed my teeth together, not pulled them (therefore making a gap). but i got them removed.
they didn't tell me i couldn't eat/drink for so many hours before, and that morning i had a cup of tea bc i had a sore throat ... so they refused to put me under all the way, and i was scared out of my mind!! however, i don't remember much after i got the iv, and the nurses told me later during a check-up that i had been telling them how much fun i was having and to pull more teeth out!! valium is funny...

oic .. well try seeing an orthodontist about it, i'm sure u don't need anything major done to fix it, i'm no doc, but logically, a retainer seems like all u should need.

    Note to everybody:

If you have ever had braces, KEEP THE RETAINER FOREVER!!!!!! Wear it a few times a week at night. Your teeth will shift slightly for the rest of your life, and braces aren't cheap. They hurt, so don't curse yourself to having to get a second round.

I learned this is hard way, and will have to get some minor work done with the Invisalign.

My best friend is going through this and it was her wisdom teeth crowding her mouth. She had them removed last week and is getting a retainer.

Word. I didn't wear my retainer for awihle and my teeth shifted a bit. I try to wear it at night, but I always wake up with it in the sheets... it hurts my mouth because it's so small, it doesn't fit right on the roof of my mouth anymore! I want to get some minor work done with invisalign or something.. but I'm sure the insurance won't cover it since it's cosmetic. Anyone know what they cost??

It all depends. Invisalign can cost as low as $4,000 but this is if there is only minor tooth movement and the only affected teeth are the upper and/or lower front teeth. For more serious cases like work needed for both the upper and lower arch, the cost is somewhere in the $6000 range.

There is frequently another alternative to this; kevlar splints.

A dentist takes a strand of kevlar and basically hot glues it behind the teeth that are susceptible to shifting. It's pretty permanent (my first one lasted five years) and you don't have to remember to put it in and no one ever sees it. It's quite cost-effective as well (I think I paid all of $75 for mine).

However, your teeth need to be in their proper place for this to work--it won't shift them back, it only holds them in place. So you might need a retainer initially.

    Best wishes.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

Mine came out a day after they put it in. I don't trust them. I trust good hard plastic.

If it is a small gap, you can have it filled with composite bonding. It is fairly inexpensive and lasts for about 3-5 years. I had it done and have been happy with it.

Hehe...when applied correctly and with the right amount of heat and time, the epoxy bond and kevlar strand is far stronger than even the metal in the retainer.

But, your dentist may obviously vary...
