    Default Manufactured with California emisssions

I was reading the DMV website, and it said that if my car wasn't manufactured to be operated in California, then I won't be able to register it. I'm all stressed over this now!! I did a Google search, but it didn't yield any useable information. Where can I find out if I'll be able to register my car? I have a 2001 Nissan Altima...someone help!!

I think you have to go in to the registration office, they should know best. I think it really only excludes older cars.... but I could be wrong.

do you see people driving around the same type of car you have? B/c then it's likely fine.

California has their own emissions policies (hence what on the Price is Right all the cars are stipulated to have CA emissions systems). I believe you can get your exhaust system modified with after-market thingamadoodles to make it compatible, but I really don't have a clue what it would cost.
But, no, you can't just register out of state cars in CA.

    Where are our soCal hotties???

Wow, I never would have thought of this! So, in addition to the expenses you incur to move to CA, you actually have to convert your exhaust system as well?

I never even knew that! I've lived here all my life so it's never come up. I'm sure you'll be fine. I don't believe that everyone who moves here (because there are so many of them!) have to sell their cars first.

I bought my 2003 Hyundai in Memphis and moved it to California the following year with no problems. Most newer-model cars meet California's stricter emissions requirements.

Yes I believe most manufacturers now meet standards in all 50-states to keep things simple.

What you need is to have a smog test when you get back to CA. That'll let you know if your car is ok or not.

That's the bottom line. CA and NY and probably a few other states have instituted vehicle emission standards that are tighter than the federal standards. For a NEW car, this typically means that models intended for sale in CA and NY need to be equipped with extra stuff to lower their emissions versus the same cars intended for sale in other states. A few cars are able to meet the tighter CA and NY emissions standards WITHOUT any additional gadgetry thanks to a good design thus the same car can be sold in all 50 states (I'm thinking most Japanese cars).

When it comes to registering a USED car for the first time in NY or CA, the states don't have any specific requirement other than the car meeting an exhaust pipe test. Depending on the original design of the car, as well as the actual condition of the car, it may or may not pass the test. If it doesn't you can't register it in NY or CA ... which leaves you with a choice of adding extra gadgetry to clean up the exhaust / rebuild the engine etc. so that the car WILL pass the test, or selling it before the registration from your former state runs out and buying a different car that WILL pass the test. The costs involved can potentially run into many thousands of dollars, but this is a very individual thing based on the original design of the particular car and the actual engine condition of the particular car.
