Aaah sorry that was so long--it has been a recent revelation to me after reading that rag for too long.

In Glamour's defense, they actually run some good articles once in awhile, like college democrats and college republican groups, young females across the US and how they are addressing abortion. And I saw another one that was really informative about the details of Roe v. Wade and that it really could be overturned. It's great for Glamour to have stuff like that, often it's the only news some women get.

Yeah, I avoided it as soon as I saw the title. Then, my Cosmo came in the mail, and I knew I would need to confront it. I already knew exactly what the article would say...but it still angered me. I like reading Cosmo, and Glamour is my #1 fave mag .. but this is just the stereotype that I know will stick around longer than our opinions of either side... although I am looking forward to the letters to the editor that I expect to be printed in the next few issues...

P.S. I agree w/ Alaska, that usu. Glamour is good about putting positive, well-written articles in the mag...

With that said, it is finally the answer I've been looking for when I wonder over and over why their articles contain shit that does not apply to me.

It's all about tips for At The Office!! And the "fashion steals" at over $100---most Cosmo readers are probably like myself (before stripping) --young, working menial jobs like retail/waitstaff/bartending, as well as trying to live on your own--it is hard enough to pay MALL PRICES, hello, let alone ugly ass designer crap you have to call 800 #'s to get.

No matter how much $$$ I make/have, I don't get a big head, the days of not affording a $20 pair of jeans were not that long ago, and I thank my lucky stars I have found an avenue to make $$ so that I can bypass all the unpaid and too-competitive interships in such "glamourous" professions as these. Ugh, so I can sit and write garbage all day that doesn't pertain to other ppl and is str8 up degrading to women?

It really is a minority of people that can relate to the shit they write about sometimes--there is only a limited amount of women/ppl who have the jobs and lifestyles they do.

And what is up with those horror story tell-alls? They are usually not so bad!!!

COSMO IS GEARED TOWARDS THEM--THE WRITERS. No one else.

YEah, i agree. ALL of the "job" things are AT THE OFFICE. haha. pff not all of us work in a office..or even WANT to! (not me!)

i like cosmo...well cuz i think its the best one out of all the other girl mags...but there is alot of lame stuff in it. alot of the same sex tips...n a bunch of "outfits" that u cud buy that they put together for you.

anyways like a few other girls said, im glad there are women out there who will take this article seriously, thinking the sex industry is ALL bad. cuz then itd look like the sex industry is so light n trendy n it will be less money and more expolition(sp). i dont want stripping to die! haha. not fair that i jus started not too long ago, wish i could of done it when it was still very taboo and the money was better.

i wonder how one goes about writing an article such as this

id like to submit one on stripping

    the "REAL lives of strippers"

but i guess it wouldn't be nearly as entertaining as our stereotype.

yes, apparently there is no strength or honor involved in doing what we do..... even though i get "oh my god youre a stripper?? i would NEVER have the guts to do THAT" more often than anything..

maybe its best we keep these stereotypes going, it just makes us that much more mysterious and taboo. if people really knew how lame i was in person i dont think thatd be very good for business

I think it would be good to have an article written about what strippers are really like... but like you said in the post below this one maybe it is best to keep it mysterious...

    ah yes.

i think the world is not ready for our story.

    ha.

besides, if these crazy girls really knew how it went, our clubs would be packed and business is all sorts of crappy without anymore competition.

i believe it adds to our appeal when a guy's girlfriend is like OMGOMGOMGOMSTRIP CLUBS and then it just makes them want to go more =D

    let's keep em guessing....

as a matter of fact, it's quite often i suck dick for coke.....

I'm surprised Cosmo wasn't offended by this lol. That pretty much describes them to a T. So I guess their point is, any kind of sex is great unless you're getting paid for it?

Being a stripper takes brains, a personality, social skills and there even is a physical aspect. We are our own contractors, own agent, accountant, secretary, self motivator, coordinator and director. Many of us go to school and even have degrees.

Sure maybe not all of us are geniuses, but most hardly unintelligent. Its easy to say that a sex worker isn’t bright because of a few bad apples. Maybe men don’t want to admit to being the victims in the situation. It’s easier to say that the woman is the one to make you to run to the atm for the third time and that he is in complete control of the situation. Flipping the coin wouldn’t make it very attractive for their part =D I think maybe it helps them set us apart from being their mothers, sisters etc.
At this point, I think I can say it's easier to be a stupid president than a stupid stripper.

I’m sorry so many people have to be closed minded.
Oh well, less people to compete with =D

Alaska, I agree that Cosmo is almost completely irrelevant for anyone who isn't filthy rich. And those who are filthy rich pay other people to shop for them, they're not trying to get fashion advice from a magazine.

I used to read Cosmo until I realized that every article and every list is the same, they just take an article from 1980, revamp it, call the positions something more modern, and ship it out. I'm not paying 5 dollars to read that.

The girl who wrote the article sounds like she'll do anything for money. Work in a job she doesn't like, write an article for Cosmo that has no literary or informative value, etc. I'm surprised she didn't just get really jealous and try to be a porn star to make the money. Maybe she did but she just wasn't hot enough and this was her way of "lashing out" at the industry.

I must say.... when I'm in the mood for some light, trashy reading, I go for Cosmo. It's like a dirty little habit for me. BUT, even though I do sometimes enjoy wasting time reading such crap, it really is just that... crap. Seriously, written for privileged white girls who seem to have no hobbies other than shopping and pleasing men. I mean, yeah right, who the hell spends $200 on a "bargain" pair of shoes?

I've gone to the library before and looked at all the old Cosmos and compared them. If you do this, you will notice that they take the EXACT same articles, alter them a little, and sell them again. Over and over again, it's ridiculous.

I'm surprised at how many actually read Cosmo. Maybe it's an age thing because I haven't been able to read that bs in years. The women's magazines I like are Allure (for makeup and skin tips), Marie Claire (good reporting, topics of actual interest about more than pleasing your man), and occasionally Jane, although I find it a little immature.

Yup, Jane is much better content-wise...I just can't get the trash-fix I used to from Cosmo...so has anyone ever read that nu-feminist quarterly BITCH? They have some good stuff in there, if you can get past the (sorry) lesbian slant...(and being way too outrageous---they seem to agree that wearing a shirt that says I HAD AN ABORTION! is a nice idea...) but anyway they always have the "Jane rant of the month"... it's funny, both have their merits but...ugh Cosmo is way crazy.

Its too bad that some women like this try to blame dancers for all of thier insecurities, problems and lack of self esteem.
There will always be a seedy element in this industry, but then there is a seedy element in every industry.

Sorry but you're not an expert on field untill you've performed every related job within the field. Being a Porn magazine EDITOR only makes you an expert on being a PORN MAGAZINE EDITOR.

^^^ Who said she was any good at editing? being a porn magazine editor just means you were a porn magazine editor.... not an expert on anything, imo.

    Noticed something on Amazon:

The Cosmo Kama Sutra: 77 Mind-Blowing Sex Positions (Cosmopolitan) (Hardcover)
    by The Editors of Cosmopolitan

Now why exactly did she have to go to work for a porn magazine to write this article?
