    Default Hives... wtf?

I keep getting hives on my arms. Always in the same places but nothing goes on my arms there when I get them!! I've been watching it closely. At first I thought it was me putting my arms behind my head and it was my shampoo, but my scalp didn't itch and I switched shampoos just in case and... here they are!!

It starts of very very small and within 10 minutes it's completely flared up over my entire arm.

It can't be something I've eaten.. or something I've touched...

    wtf?

I don't wear long sleeves, either.

I'm guessing it has to be stress. It flared up the first time when I was packing and had nowhere to live.. then during the move...

I'm probably going to need an all-around check-up at this rate. I'll get an allergies test and an ultrasound and some lorazepam.

Extremely cold water or ice will help calm them down a bit and stop the itching.

I had an issue with hives all last year and it turned out to be a viral infection that had affected a generation of my immune cells (which took about 9 months for my body to replace, after which the hives went away). An allergy test certainly can't hurt, but there can be other causes too.

I'm gonna go to my doctor and he's gonna think I'm a hypochondriac!

    Heehee, thanks girls.

Can't be a hypochondriac if you have the hives to show him!

I ended up taking prednisone for mine (which is a very effective but not-fun drug) and a lovely antihistamine called Atarax, which targets itching and swelling and is also an anti-anxiety drug. That stuff worked great in combination with the prednisone. The down side (or benefit, depending on how you look at it) is that it is powerfully sleep-inducing. I'm generally pretty immune to the drowsy side effect from things like cold medicine or Benadryl, so for me it takes two instead of one, but you will sleep beautifully all night in luxurious, restful sleep--for about 12 hours. And then want to nap all the next day.

I will say that Atarax is great if you need to reset your sleep rhythm or need to catch up after an all-nighter. Take two of these and call me in the late afternoon!

I get stress hives. That's probably what it is.

The first time I worked as an AD, it was on a horrible show and the whole experience was a nightmare. I got called shortly thereafter to AD again, and I broke out in hives all over my arms and my FACE! Just from the phone call! I turned that job down. Fortunately I was able to work back up to it and I'm a great AD now, LOL!

aviendah, what viral infection causes hives? I made a thread about them back in aug or sept, but had been getting 'em for quite soem time, when my doc told me the only thing I could do was take allegra. I still get 'em ocassionally. Mine are not from stress, they were comming every day.

Could be the dust kicked up from moving.

Did you know that 80% of the dust on our homes is dragged in by our shoes ! Animal dander and such even if you don't have a pet, not to mention whatever is on the streets and the floor of the club.

Could also be the treatment chemicals in your water supply drying out / irritating your skin.

Try taking shorter, cooler showers before running to your doc, as the longer and warmer the shower, the longer you are exposing your skin to chemical absorption (chlorine, flouride, etc.).

Oh, and keep your skin moisturized. Dry skin = angry inflamed itchy skin .

Sun? Stress? I got them when I was in Tucson, and I had a salve I'd made with laborador tea, plantain, and sage that worked really well on them.

I get them too, they look like giant welts. Its an allergic reaction, could be something in the air. I have some cream for them, its an antihistamine. But I usually just wait for them to go away, they don't really bother me.

I tell the doctor I am stressed out of my wit's end, the world's ending, omg death destruction and mayhem. Homeless, divorce, marriage, PAIN DEATH DESTRUCTION!

Instead of prescribing me something for stress, he prescribes me enough sleeping pills to kill myself with.

    BRILLIANT!

At least they're the ones that make me hallucinate really cool stuff.

And the hives ARE from stress.

I've got the same thing ^^. Good advice, hydrocortisone cream calms it down pretty well. Even when I go see a doc, they just prescribe me this cream, so I don't even bother seeing the doc about it anymore. But, when I had it badly a few years ago, they put me on steriods (and made me FAT ) to make it go away, so I KNOW to take care of it early now.

So... how do the sleeping pills help you when you have hives and you need to go to work (do a show, waitress, etc)?? You'll be asleep!

I'm confused as to why your doc would prescribe it as well.

GCG's got a good point, although when docs prescribe weird stuff, it's almost expected to me. My mom takes anti-depressants for back pain.. weird. And I thought she was just bullshitting doctors to get some 'goodies', but I guess it's legit, it even says on the bottle "take so-and-so daily for back pain".

The doctor said 'A good nights sleep will fix everything'.

    Whatever.

I got some over the counter stress stuff.

Once again, I would have said to the doctor. That may be all good and fine however the type of work I do being very image orientated I would require me to have something to help them fade (and to deal with the stress) pretty promptly ... that doctor is an idiot. :rolls eyes:

No wonder I only like to go to the doc to get my Depo and check ups etc as such. I have trust issues with any type of doctor or anyone in the medical profession. Plus dentists.

I would go back to the doc and demand that he give you something else.

Or just go to a whole new doctor.

My anti-anxiety medication is an addictive medication. He's not the first doctor to refuse it to me on the basis I might be addicted. I'm sure if I go again next week, he'll hand it over, since I'll have seen him more than once.

Of course there's a doctor I heard of in the Valley that's pretty free with his 'scripts.

You won't take steroid creams, but you do use prescription strength hydrocortisone? Not to be rude, but hydrocortisone is a steroid.
