Default Don't screw with a kidney infection

No, seriously, don't. I started feeling bad Monday night, so I took some Tylenol and went to bed. I woke up Tuesday with a 103 fever, and my whole body hurt. I laid in bed hoping it would get better and my boyfriend finally threw me in the car around 9PM. I couldn't even walk I hurt so bad, and after some time in the ER, I had a bottle of Bactrim and some Percocet. I should start to feel better by Thursday (or so they say).

Fast foward to Saturday morning. 4 days of not being able to stand up to get out of bed, puking constantly, and fevers going up to 104.7. I was friggin' cooking myself from the inside out, and I was too hard headed and scared to go back to the hospital. I hadn't eaten anything other than watermelon and popsicles (provided by my partner), and the medicine was not working. I was septic, in a bad way, so they changed my meds and gave me a shot of Demerol. Thank the lord for non-crappy doctors who actually listen.

I'm starting to feel a little bit better, but seriously ya'll, if you have a kidney infection, don't fuck around with it. It's a crappy way to waste a week.

Oh honey, I'm so sorry. I get them too and they're the worst. You can't sit, stand, OR lie down.

And yes, people, don't screw with this! Suck it up and see a dr. ASAP. Your kidneys are nothing to fool around with.

Ginger, hope you feel better soon. You should be able to move around better tomorrow once the new meds kick in towards the infection.

Make sure you treat yourself good in the next few weeks too. No alcohol, lots of water and cran juice. Don't hold in when you have to pee either. Go right away.

    Hugs hon.

People can get them from too many sodas, alcohol, alot of stuff can cause them. Yea kidney infections really suck.

I don't know about others, but I get them when I take in too many other bad liquids as opposed to good ones.

I used to get them from drinking too much Mt. Dew, but I don't drink reg soda anymore so that's done.

But, if I am on vaca and I drink alcohol every night without balancing it with enough water and cran juice, BANG kidney infection when I return.

OMG i use to get these as a KID all the fucking time. start out as a UTI and end up being a kidney infection. I remember the pain being so bad Id piss myself.

They are serious ..because the pain is so fucking horrible. After having two kids..let me just say it's worse having a god damn kidney infection

Make sure you watch your pee though, anything really dark or red you need to go to the ER

This is scary. I ONLY drink pop. I rarely drink water..if ever. I've never had an infection *knocks on wood* but hearing about your situation Ginger is making me more cautious. I really do hope you feel better.

You might just not be predisposed to getting them Cin, so no worries.

But I'm going to go all Momma on you and tell you to DRINK SOME DARN WATER once in awhile!!! Or at least some cran juice.

I have to drink tons of water because I'm prone to them. I can just smell and feel a urinary or bladder infection by now. I try to flush them out with water, but I had a bladder infection that plagued me for a month because I couldn't afford to go to the doc. Thank god it didn't spread to my kidneys. I try to drink tons of water and pee often.

Pregnant women are susceptible to UTIs which can quickly spread upward into nasty infections. It can cause premature labor. Drink water!

They started me on Bactrim and it didn't work, so they put me on Cipro. It seems to be actually working, although I still feel like somebody beat the hell out of me.

Cipro is the most effective but I can't take it because it is category C and I am pregnant... shame.

Seraya, If they did cultures on your urine, after two weeks, the lab should have susceptibilities back and your docs should know what should take care of this. Unfortunately pregnancy does complicate the "what drugs are you allowed to have" situation. Hope you feel better soon.

How do people get kidney infections anyways?
As noted above, the start is usually from a bladder infection. However, you can also bring on kidney infections through the consumption of excessive amounts of protein, which happened to me last summer after my car wreck pre-SF in LV. I was eating probably about 200+ grams of protein a day when I got the infection, and it put me down for an entire week. Bright orange urine and excruciating pain in my lower back like I was being punched every time I took a breath. Sadly, this infection was followed by another in my throat, such that I couldn't eat for about 8 days. As the result of not being able to eat and being unable walk, let alone hit the gym, I lost about fifteen pounds.

The kidney infection was not something I care to relive at any point.
