Default Need Ideas for Buying A New Laptop

My Toshiba Satellite 1955-S801 is finally giving-up the ghost. I had bought it used and I've been using it at the club with the Traktor program.

Since my Dell desktop is also rather old and not running as smoothly as I would like, I need some ideas for a laptop model that I could buy that I would be able to replace both.

I don't do much heavy work on my computer. No webpage building with anything more complicated than Yahoo Geocities Pagebuilder. I just want to be able to surf the 'Net, play some DVDs and use it for my DJ gig at the club.

If any of the DJs here could suggest good laptops that I could purchase, let me know. Try to keep the cost level low, but if it's good enough, I'd be wiling to make the investment.

I'm shopping around for a new one, as well. I also have a Toshiba Satellite, but I don't feel like going to check out the model number. It's about 2 years old, and works fine, but has some overheating problems. I have just been checking all the ads on Sundays in the paper from Best Buy, Office Depot, etc, looking for the best price. I'm probably going to go for something mid-range to higher, just so I (hopefully) won't have to replace it as quickly. I know I'm not being very helpful, but I'll jump in with you and see what people recommend. Obviously I want the best soundcard possible. I'm also worried about my existing dj programs working with Vista, which comes preloaded on all the pc's now. What brands/models have you looked at so far?

If your needs don't exceed what you've listed then any old laptop will do, including used models (often very cheap!) I highly recommend going that route if your just doing some minor web design and playing music. If you aren't doing any major graphics design or getting into video work or serious multi-tracking audio applications then your needs will be met easily with a 1.2ghz machine with 512mb ram.

Your only decisions will be hard drive size and overall weight of the machine. Overheating issue is a biggie, research the model you become interested in for any overheating issues before you buy it.

Personally my main concern in laptops (besides overheating potential) is weight and size. My machine for the club is a 14 inch screen Asus that weighs 5 pound with battery installed. I love that little thing.

Overheating is negated with one of these.

    I use it for DJing @ clubs and it's a Godsend. =)

^Mine still overheats sometimes, and I have that exact same chillplate. I use that now, coupled with a clip-on fan pointed at the comp as well. So far that seems okay. The fact it tends to be hotter than balls in my booth also isn't helping.
