Exclamation Video Killed the (net) Radio Star!

Net radio just got their ass handed to em- from an email I just got from Pandora:

The survival of Pandora and all of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays and broadcast radio doesn't pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill every Internet radio site, including Pandora.

In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and webcasters. I hope that you will consider joining us.

Please sign our petition urging your Congressional representative to act to save Internet radio: http://capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/...lertid=9631541

Please feel free to forward this link/email to your friends - the more petitioners we can get, the better.

Understand that we are fully supportive of paying royalties to the artists whose music we play, and have done so since our inception. As a former touring musician myself, I'm no stranger to the challenges facing working musicians. The issue we have with the recent ruling is that it puts the cost of streaming far out of the range of ANY webcaster's business potential.

OMG I love Pandora! I hope that this can get changed, it really seems unfair.

Yeah, Live365 is taking it up the backside as well. Now people who aren't VIP members will get about 5x the ads when listening live. Laaaaaaaaame...

Indeed. The RIAA is trying to stifle niche market segments. It's the only way the majors can hope to survive seeing as they dropped the ball big time on the net concept.

Indie artists adept at doing their own thing have no need for major labels and will not sign their lives away. Only vapid, uber-pap crap will take that route and sell their souls for their shot at ubiquity and mass sales (which aren't happening as no one is buying that garbage).

Soooooo... the only way to stem the tide of new music slipping through the grasp of the big ugly major is to cut the indie life lines (Web radio, P2P) or buy them out right (My Space, You Tube, MP3.com). When they can't win playing by the rules, they simply just rewrite them.

    Gotta luv capitalism eh? NOT!
