I saw it today at Target. I picked it up and went "Hmmm... strange, don't think I've heard of this one." His son "assembled it" from his writings? I dunno...I'll probably get it anyway, but that sounds suspiciously like ghostwriting to me.

^Our library cards are nifty little keychain tags, like a grocery store card. The local branch is about 4-5 miles from my house and has a cafe and a dog park and a huge playground on the property too! Love it. Anyway, Silmarillion was a good book but it took me awhile to get thru it, back in HS, maybe a little earlier. It's very...dense. And frankly some of the history stuff got rather boring. Lemme know what you think. Oh and if anyone bought the new one, post a review.

thanks for the tip- i'll tell ya my thoughts... but i don't mind dense history... the other three books i took out were all historical nonfiction... armenian genocide, revolutionary/subculture groups in Paris, and the settling of Australia by the guy who wrote Schindler's List. I was in desperate need of more academic-feeling schtuff; serves me right for taking a semester off.

Got exactly a third through The Silmarillion while in college. I remember putting down the book--it's the pre-Middle Earth mythology--and saying to myself, "What the fuck am I reading this for? Made-up mythology about a made-up world?"

I never went back; I guess I burned out on Tolkien in that moment. I liked the movies, though.

... oh dear... ThAt Dense??? maybe i'll stick with "a shameful act: the armenian genocide and the question of turkish responsibility..." and feel more productive.

then i can feel more confident in flirting with the cute armenian boys at the next hollywood bike ni- i mean, be more worldly.

The Silmarillion was really written by Tolkien for himself--backstory for LOTR and the Hobbit, so that he would stay consistent throughout the LONG story. Compare Stephen King, where characters sometimes change back and forth between names. The Silmarillion is more of a reference book than a reading book. It became popular because there were so many people who could not stand to leave Middle Earth and wanted more books to read.

That is probably why this unfinished book was finished up by his son. I think he should get credit as co-author, like Spider Robinson did when he finished Robert Heinlein's manuscript for Variable Star.

You can buy the Children of Hurin from the Science Fiction Book Club (www.sfbc.com) for $14.99 + $2.49 s/h.
