I hate my French teacher. I didn't want to take the class anyway, but I have to take a language as part of my degree requirements.
The class is boring, 4 days a week at 9 am; and believe me, I am NOT a morning person. So yes, I have a problem with attendance. You're allowed 3 absences (excused or not) before you start losing points. The syllabus states that excessive absences will result in a lowering of your grade. That's it. Nothing about failure or anything.
As well, it certainly doesn't help that I've been having a shitty semester to begin with and have had a really bad problem with motivation this spring.
So this particular teacher is super-anal about attendance. Basically, you could've been in a car accident that morning and be missing an arm, and it would still count against you. He's terrible about responding to students' emails and is not very helpful. At the start of the semester, I had tried to explain to him that I get a lot of migraines, and that my meds don't always completely get rid of them, so that if I'm absent more than 3 times over the semester, that's usually why. And he basically was like, "Too bad. If it's really that bad, you'll have to get it in writing from a doctor."
Yesterday in class (after feeling like shit last week and missing a few classes), he hands back a quiz, and on mine is written, "you are failing this course due to excessive absences- 9 to date." Ok, so upon seeing this, I'm really not that surprised. BUT what pisses me off is that, instead of emailing me about it or talking to me after class, like a good professor would, he fucking writes it on a quiz. Ok, so this is college, and I understand that teachers are NOT going to treat us like high schoolers and baby us and remind us to keep our grades up. In a large lecture class, I can definitely understand a teacher not being super-involved with each of the students. However, this is not a large lecture class. It is a very small French class. I believe that a good teacher is concerned about their students' well-being and, while they're not going to spend a ton of energy making sure that all the students do what they're supposed to, they should at least show concern for a student who is not doing well and at least maybe ask them what's going on.
What really pisses me off about this is.... he told me I'm failing this week... and the deadline to drop classes was last week. Thanks a lot, you douche. This information would've been extremely helpful last week!!!!!!!
ARG!!!!!!! I'm going to end up with a nice fat F for that class. I suppose if I was more into school right now I'd care more, but to be honest, right now I'm completely sick of the bullshit and jumping through hoops you often find in college. I didn't even bother talking to him about it. I know he's not going to change anything. I just don't give a flying fuck anymore.
Oh well, at least I get to sleep in now, because there's absolutely no point in going to that class....
