Default I acted like a baby at the tattoo shop

So today I went to get my tattoo worked on. The existing one goes from the top of my right shoulder down my side to about four inches above the hip bone.

Anyway, I wanted to get it fixed up because I didn't feel like it looked cohesive and uniform and I really want it perfect. I went in a few weeks ago to talk to the guy and he was really creative and had lots of ideas for how it could be improved. I was really excited about it until today. For some reason I was really nervous about the whole thing, not sure why.

I get there and he shows me the design and it was pretty good, but he wanted to draw on my back to make sure it would look ok. So I'm standing there and I jump out of my skin when he touches me with the marker, lol. And then after about five minutes I start feeling like I'm going to pass out. He was nice about it but I'm sure he was thinking, "Oh great, this ought to be fun." I sat there for a little while and then we got started.

I could barely sit for the tattoo. Bear in mind that he was tattooing me on the softest part of my lower side and that is one of the WORST places to get tattooed. My body wanted to jump every time that gun got near me. Finally I got myself under control, but I felt like a dork. I said, "It makes you wonder how I got this tat in the first place, huh?" haha, and he said, "Yeah, it does." (Then I died of embarassment, haha)

I really don't know how I sat for it originally. All I can figure is that I was always on drugs.

Luckily the improvements really make the tattoo look complete. I am exceptionally happy with it. I'm really glad I got it done, but I would never suggest getting tattooed on that part of the body. It fucking sucks!

The new part is on the very bottom, it's a little darker than the rest. And this pic sucks because it's really hard to take a picture of your own back.

OOWWW! I saw the pic and I felt the pain. Its hard to get a tat esp. one that size. I applaud you seriously. I wouldve left before they started to fill it in. I think it looks great too!!

my dad got his first tattoo a couple weeks ago (we got matching tats for his fiftieth birthday).

i went first, and i've been tattooed a lot in a short period of time (probably 13 hours of work in a year, so a couple hours every couple of months) and i'm used to it.

he went purple and shook uncontrollably for the whole hour. hilarious but also sad.

"no, no, you're doing really good." poor daddy.

I would recommend against it, unless you are used to getting tattooed. It's not for the faint-of-heart, that's for sure. The only reason I completed mine the first time through is because the guy started at the top and worked his way down. By the time he got to the bottom it was too late to change my mind.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm glad people like it. This tattoo has been a topic of conversation a million times in my dancing career.

I just got one recently and I was so miserable- but it was too late to back out. I know I'll take some music in with me next time to help a bit.

WOW! That's some extensive work! Gorj! I didn't read all replies, but there's supposed to be some numbing cream you can get from the doctor. Please, I got a tatto on my ankle, & I was so sure I was going to hurl.

emla cream isnt really ideal for tattoos on account of all the whiping the artist does during the tattoo.

I'm completely prepared for it hurting sooo much though, in reality. The pain will be somewhat welcome, it's a very important tattoo for me.

Wow, that's really pretty. I'm not usually a fan of very large tattoos, but I like that one.

I'm getting my tattoo sometime this year and I know I'm going to be a total fucking wuss about it. I have that famous Celtic low pain tolerance, and I'm getting my tat on the inside of my wrist. Owie. I guess I'll just pop an assload of Ibuprofen before and after!

Is it near that time of the month for you? Skin is way, way, way more sensitive to needles/irritation then. I could totally see it making a huge difference in how a tattoo felt. Worth it, though, to have the work look nice and for you to be happy with it. I agree, it's flattering to your form.

Take note, Lola -- make sure it's not the week before when you get yours.

Don't take Ibuprofen beforehand! It thins out your blood, and that's really not what you want when you go to get a tattoo or piercing -- you could end up bleeding a lot more than you normally would.
