Default a question for the Australians here...

...or anyone who is familiar with the process of studying abroad, really.

I'm going to be studying in Australia starting in Jan. 08, and I'm starting to get my paperwork together as much as I can now.

So I ran into this quandary when reading the requirements/conditions for applying for a student visa. It said that one of the conditions is that I prove I have enough $$ to sustain myself and pay for school for the duration of my study. I currently have enough to last me for the first year, including tuition and all that. The program that I'm doing lasts for three years, though. My plan is to apply for permission to work, and pay for the last two years of my stay through employment (dancing, of course ).

Will my application be denied because I don't have three years' worth of funds in the bank? How do they determine how much three years' worth of funds IS, anyway? Is there any way to indicate that I will be funding myself through employment?

I have, LOL. Twice, and I was put on hold for hours each time.

I'm still going to keep trying of course, but I figured it couldn't hurt to search on my own, and ask in a few other places where someone might know something, in the meantime. Sorry if this is too off topic.

You are allowed to work 20 hours per week on a student visa.

One year of funds should be more than enough if you inform them you wish to work your 20 hours. Then you can say the year is to sustain you until you get that job. It'll prove that you have more than enough to live as a resident without needing financial aid.

You can work 20 hrs per week during the semester and full time during vacation breaks. All Unis have an international office which cater specifically to full paying international students. This is a really good place to find out all you need to know.

You may wish to check the website below.
