How can I get rid of the smell? Like, really rid of it?
How can I get rid of the smell? Like, really rid of it?
Vinegar, undiluted.
& Next time she grinds her cat ass into something to pee on it, slap her butt with a flyswatter & yell, "NOOOO!"
Is it machine washable? Wash on hot with vinegar.
Is she stressed? Or sick? Or did she just do it out of spite?

When you are dealing with cat urine or any urine for that matter. The 3 major parts of urine is urea- which the sticky tacky part, the urochrome- which is the pigment or color part and the uric acid cyrstals and salts. Alot of products will work on the 1st two parts listed above which removes the stain and odor, the odor part is not gone the cyrstals just dry and become dormat, Isn't interesting that when it rains, or gets humid the ordor comes back or the carpet gets wet from steam cleaning or more urine from a pet the odor comes back, it always comes back.... It takes an very special product to get rid of urine competely, look at the following site this company makes bacteria and enzymes to eat Fats, Oils, Grease, strach, and Sugar. They spent alot of time feeding very specfic bacteria all the components of urine until they had a product that eat it all the way to Black Light Clean- that means that all the residue of the urine is gone.. Give them a try they truly have something very good. Good Luck

has some tips w/ stuff you've already got around the house..
They make special enzyme cleaners you can buy at the pet store. I have used them on carpets with great results. I'm not sure about blankets though.
You should really be paying attention as to WHY the cat is pissing on your stuff. More than likely it's feeling neglected, or it has a urinary tract problem. Hitting the cat doesn't do anything but make them afraid of you for the rest of the day. In fact, if it's a behavioral issue, it will probably continue to pee on things BECAUSE you hit him/her.

i got this stuff called "get serious" it takes away the stain, the smell, everything. and it doesn't take hardly any of it. it also works on just about any surface, and it takes quite literally, less than three minutes.

i got it at petsmart.

kinda on and off topic... i just adopted a little cat yesterday from the shelter that had been declawed by past owners and her past family got rid of her because she wouldn't use a litter box. i was thinking the sand hurts her paws. so she peed on my bed last night. Any advice on how to get her to go in the box or at least in a separate box lined with cardboard or something? Basically anywhere other than my bed?

how recently was she declawed? you're supposed to use a different litter til the paws are healed.
Unless she was JUST declawed to it was a horribly botched job it's more likely stress of a new home that is causing this. keep her confined to a smaller room(like a bathroom) when you arent watching her at least for the first few days until she acclimates. Make sure there is a litter box and food/water in with her.

^^^ i'll try this for when i'm not home. So far i think she may have started to use the box, since no new messes have appeared, or if there are i haven't found them. She's the first declawed cat i've adopted so i have no idea if it was a botched job or how long its been. The guy at the shelter sid her last family had her for almost a year but he doesn't know if they are the ones who had her declawed or when. She was at the shelter for almost a month. Britt244, what kind different litter do you mean? The white kind that's like crystallized instead of clay?
Biweekly? That's an issue that needs to be addressed. Obviously, if they still do it that much, smakin their butts isn't working. You really need to figure out why. More that 1 cat pisses everywhere?
How clean is the litter box? Some cats tollerate a dirty box better than others. My cats need scooped every day or they will take a shit right outside the box. Its their way of tellin me to get it clean.
Maybe they don't like the litter? Thats another reason my cats will shit outside the box. They are picky about their litter. They hate Fresh Step. It smells to strong, and its to dusty.
Cats pissing outside the box is also a sign of illness, or a UTI. There is special litter you can buy to see if your cat has an UTI. the litter will turn a special color of the cat has it.
Maybe they don't like sharing a litter box? Some cats can be picky like that. I had a cat once who refused to share a box. He would pick a corner of the house, and shit and piss there, unless he had his very own clean box.
Cats naturally want to use a litter box. They don't want to go outside it, because they need to scratch in the litter to coverit. Its an instinct. If they are going outside the box, they have a reason for doing it... Its either an unhappy cat, or a sick cat.

well, her claws should be healed by now. if you take her to the vet to get her checked out (and you should) they can probably give you some idea of if it was done recently.
and if it WAS done recently, she needs paper based instead of clay based litter.
Oh, I'll explain. Three adult cats are living in a much smaller house than what they are used to...we got them two boxes & they designated one the Pee box & the other for Number 2, which I don't understand but is Cat Logic apparently.
Their primary owners have been shuttling back and forth from California to Montana for the past 6 months so the cats pee, barf & sometimes poop everywhere to express their distress at feeling abandoned, ignored & forced to live in a smaller space. They fight more than we'd like...they will be living on separate floors in the house now.
I don't swat or yell at them hard but we try to show that we'd prefer them to chill it out. I suppose it's not working since there was a pile of barf in the kitchen this morning.
So yes, no abuse here, just cats not understanding what is going on & not wanting to get along.

why are they throwing up so frequently? ^
The vomit is less frequent than the pee but it's "strategically placed" (like on the kitchen rug.) They also barf up hair & wheeze (2 are older)...
Often they wait for a stress trigger situation (no one's home, their owner has been gone & they're worried, they're mad at the dogs, they don't like the food) and they piss in the stairwell, pee on the blanket, or poop in the foyer/mudroom.
Yep, divas in fur.
Oh, no I wasn't implying the butt smacking was abuse. I would smack my cat on the butt if needed....I was just saying that method wasn't working if they are still doin it, and that usually that is a sign of something else that disipline won't fix.
Now its obvious that they are having behavioral problems due to the stress of not having a permenant home, and being shuttled back and forth between states. No wonder they poop and pee! They are confused. Cats tend to get attached to places more than people, while dogs tend to get attached to people more. A cat constantly shipped between homes woudl confuse and stress them out like crazy. They need stabiility. The poor things are just confused, and know no other way to express their distress.
I guess not much you can do except hope they calm down and get used to where they are living.
Good luck....

pinkkitten -- you will need kitty litter similiar to http://www.fibrecycle.com.au/
I've used every type of kitty litter available and this by far is the best choice. It really does help keep the odour down (smells like wet paper mainly lol) and is easy to clean and so forth. Plus your de-clawed kitty definately won't find it harsh.
As for the OP, I usually wash the pee-ed on blanket in hot water with Napisan.

sorry to go off topic from the op, but since we're talking about litter.. my kitty is declawed and got it done about a month ago. can he ever go back to normal litter? or does he need the paper based from now on? i thought after he was healed we could go back to the normal kind..
I'm pretty sure whichever cat it was, did it out of spite. These cats are attention sluts, and the past few nights, I have been having trouble sleeping because they insist on walking all over me (on my belly, on my face), and then planting themselves strategically so that when I breathe, I get a mouth full of fur. I've been having to push them off of me...last night was the worst. Boyfriend was doing me and then from nowhere, there's this purring fluffball in my face...give me a break, already! Thing is, we can't shut them out when we sleep, because our bedroom is more of a loft. Where the cat peed, was actually on a blanket (down, but cheaper--so I'm willing to try washing it) that I use primarily, that was on the couch where I usually sit in the TV room. The couch, which is leather, has a slip cover, and there was also some cat piss on the slip cover.
We close the door to the TV room when we leave the house, but I forgot when I left the house this morning and the cat did this while I was gone for just a few hours. They have food and water and a clean box, so I'm pretty sure this was a personal attack.
The cats used to belong to Boyfriend's cousin and his wife, and sending them "home" is looking like a pretty good idea right now--they've only been here for about a month anyway.

You know you have to be careful, with the baby and all! I know pregnant women are not allow to be around the cat litter after 24 hours after the cat did number 2 in thier litter. So I know them going around doin number 1 everywhere must not be to healthy also! I will call her and tell her what happen, if they need to go to the vet because of some promblem. WHo is going to pay for it! Because this promblem need to be address right away!
When the cat sometimes is angry and miss thier owner which they love unconditionally they tend to mess around the house. Which sucks I know but call her and tell her what happen and you guys figure out what need to be done about this!
This is to much for you to be going thru, When I was pregnant I nose was sentive to everything, I can image the anger you must have felt! You can be replacing things because the one of the cats are making mess. This is not good, I wish I could help hun.

De-clawed or not I would highly recommend the paper based kitty litter. Take it from me it is the best one to use... affordable and works! As I said in my previous post, I have tried every type of kitty litter that is out on the market and the one I'm using now (Breeders Choice kitty litter) has been the best in re odour control, ease of cleaning, absorption, etc.

hmm.. i'll try it, i guess. before he got declawed he was using the fresh step clumping litter and it was so easy to scoop! is it ok to use regular litter, do you know? (i still have some left and i dont want to waste it)
I use something called Nature's Miracle. It's made out of some kind of chopped up corn husk or something. I got it at Petco. And although it's relatively expensive for one bag, but it lasts for a long time, so the cost about evens out. Pogo was having problems with a UTI and I felt that maybe the dust from his litter was irritating him more. He was going outside the box too so I took him to the vet and he was suffering from an infection. It can be fatal if you don't get them treatment like, immediately. They both love the litter now and it doesn't smell like some weird fake cat litter smell - very natural.

Nature's Miracle is AWESOME.. it actually makes your house smell GOOD... wtf?
