    Default Ugh, sexism.

I'm pretty thick-skinned about sexism; I have to be, in this testosterone-fueled industry I work in. But I went to a job interview this morning and I can't believe this guy actually said this to a prospective employee...

I was applying for a production office job, in an unusually male office. Typically, even though the industry is so male-oriented, jobs like production coordinator and production secretary are female. But in this office, they're male. So I go in to interview with this coordinator I've never even met before. He's running down the particulars of the show and he actually says:

"There's a lot of guys on this one. Which is good, yanno, we get a lot of work done. But we're kind of messy, so I like to have at least one woman around to make sure the kitchen stays clean and the filing is neat."

Anybody else have any I-Can't-Believe-They-Said-That zingers?

My DFG boss said he didn't want me working on the river (trap monitoring) because I was too small..He could have been sued for "sexism"...I just pretended not to hear it, I needed the job....

(the only reason I had that job is that is sucked so bad that no able-bodied man with better options would take it)

    Yeah.

I got a job in night security once because the hiring manager said "well, OK, but wear short skirts, because then maybe the drunk guys will be too busy flirting with you to cause trouble".

Meh, it did work though. Haha, such a strippifying experience!

ETA: oh, but then I got fired for not sleeping with the manager's friend, so...yeah, lesson learned.

Wow, and it just keeps coming. I just found on craigslist. "Attractive female P.A." for $200 a day, WTF? It should be noted that P.A.'s occupy the lowest rung on the ladder (well, on the crew ladder, anyway; they do outrank extras) and they do all the shit jobs like picking up trash, fetching coffee, etc. They typically make $100-125 a day. I have NEVER heard of a P.A. having to send a photo in response to a job ad. I wonder what this asshat has in mind?

The sad thing is I'm really tempted to respond to it. *sigh*

Give me a dress and the right shoes, and I'LL go look into it. My beard might be a giveaway though.

    ^Lucky.

This is a good opportunity to point out that the insight a woman gets from working in the sex industry helps her understand how to deal with men in regular work scenarioes...I mean Good God, if I had only known what I know now, sooner, etc....

^^^ Wow, nice. What kind of office is it?

And I did respond to the P.A. ad, I am THAT hard up for work... *sigh* I did ask what the deal was, so if it's something untoward they'll probably go with one of the zillion dingbats who probably replied with bikini photos. (I sent a face pic and a resume.) Sometimes I really hate this business, but this kind of thing just renews my determination to succeed so I can legitimately send the elevator back down to other young women.

When I worked in the vet clinic, there was so much 'good girl' praise from the two male vets to the staff. These were middle aged women. It was the exact same thing they'd say to the dogs. I would just cringe whenever Dr. Perv said "good girl Molly", but at least I was only 19. If I were forty, I'd be insulted. Fuck it, I was already insulted. But this is also the guy who kept making sex jokes to me all day long (I was seventeen when I started there). I guess that's life sometimes, but why must the world be so offensive?

Once I refused employment at a company because I would 'just flirt with the boys while everything gets stolen'.

I once worked in a company where the males in higher positions would comment that I was such a "sweet, innocent little girl" (I was eighteen) and would make comments about women drivers...

Yeah...didn't stay there long. I like stripping because I get to sass back or leave... and I make more money!! Haha!

    BAHA

The place I currently work for. OMG. Not a real company.

The salesman were all hanging around the office talking about how all the secretaries get fat after they get hired, and lol good thing you (to the secretary) go jogging so you stay cute. Blah blah blah we need a pretty face around the office

And a million other things, it's fucking hilarious.

But I make decent money and I get to work largely with awesome people away from the office so I'm not perturbed.

I've had to deal with a lot... I completed 2 years worth of a music production program... after YEARS of stereotyping that a girl musician was a "teacher" or a performer if she was REALLY brave, but NEVER a techie....

I had to fight tooth and nail to get to see my teachers, get to touch the sound equipment.. there were only 2 other girls in the program, so we were vastly outnumbered, and all of us had a hard time actually getting to LEARN anything past the condescension and other students sabotage.

My first job AS a techie, was culture shock-it was in the somewhat rural south... and i'd get SUCH stares, both from the guys i worked with, as well as the musicians who I recorded/did sound and lighting for... Can't tell you HOW many times i got hit on....eeep.

Those instances were nothing though, compared to my next job... My male coworkers constantly called me doll, came up expecting(and taking) hugs, and kissing my cheeks, and making comments about my taste in clothing(a lot of dresses). One coworker took it WAY too far, to the point where i would go in to make something at the counter, and he would come up behind me, put his hands on my hips, and lightly grind while making small talk.

Why is it guys feel so entitled?

its totally not fair that that interviewer said that. Ah well, stupid bigoted people will be stupid bigoted people...

How sexism works in my favor
As I audition for a job I tell them I perform magic...

    Me: I am a magician
    Him: But you’re a girl
Me: yes, and that is why you will pay me double what you pay a man!

I was working on a charity job building a fence for a Habitat house, and another contractor sees me moving the fence boards around to the rear of the house so I can install them. He says to me, and I quote,

"You know, those jobs are for Mexicans. Pretty white girls don't need to do those jobs."

So I turned around holding my pneumatic nail gun and said in extremely American accented spanish "No hablo inglés".

    That shut him up.

Still trying to get this creep Yusef off my trail. The other day he calls and we talk. He says (because he thinks he's my boyfriend) "if you talk to some other guy and say let's have sex with him or something, I won't want anything to do with you." I said "but you do that all the time with girls." He says, "I'm a man!" That was the last time I spoke with him.
