    Default cat problem

uh, my cat has been trying to eat the cactus in our kitchen.

and i'm not talking about a little dinky cactus you see in gift shops.

    i'm talking, CACTUS, cactus.

i remember being maybe 9 years old, and i was excited, because i was finally taller than the cactus. this thing's been in our family since early childhood, we've had this thing wellllll over 17+ years.

its a pretty nice sized cactus.

yep. so. cat's trying to eat it.

any suggestions, or should i just let nature take its course and let her figure it out on her own?

i don't know if this will work, but my cat was clawing at my record collection, some since i've had since i was 5 years old. i found a cat deterrent spray at the pet store and placed some fabric around my records and sprayed the fabric with that. i couldn't even smell the spray, but my cat never went near that area again, even after i removed the fabric. some research i've done suggests putting aluminum foil on things you don't want your cat to destroy, which has totally saved my couch from being clawed to shreds. good luck!!

My ex had the same problem with his treasured clover plant...it looked ugly but he put chicken wire around the pot. You may not wanna put chicken wire up but im sure you could fashion some sort of barrier.

My cat tries to destroy the couch too! How did you manage to put aluminum foil on your couch though?

She might need roughage, our cats used to knaw on grass & I was mystified. Since they eat primarily meat, they need a little roughage. Ask a vet or a pet store employee about this.

Whenever a cat chews on grass it is because it wants to induce itself to vomit (feeling nausious).... just get some chicken wire high enough to stop the cat chewing on the cactus. You may want to look at your cat's diet as well.

It might be lacking something that is making it want to eat the plant. Otherwise it just might be feeling nausea thus just go out and buy some cat grass (yes you can grow it inside and buy it from your local nursery).

Compulsive kitty behavior...she needs more exercise...

Sounds mean but the spray bottle thing always worked...I mean just spray it in their general direction, not ON them, they'll freak, and then soon enough just picking up the bottle they'll run...

Doubt she could ruin the cactus in anyway, esp. if it's life-sized lol

Maybe get one of those pretty iron folding wall thingies, and put it in front of it. You can still see it, it doesn't look ugly, but kitty can't get it.

I worked in both a vet clinic and a pet store... so here would be my advice if you approached me as a customer.

First... the aluminum foil thing works for MOST kitties but not all. You could also try that sticky tape... it's a similiar effect... the kitties step on it...and it pulls their feet so they don't like it and will avoid it. Spray bottles are somewhat effective too..except you need to spray while the cat is doing it..and I'm sure they are times when you're not gonna be around to spray the cat. He or she may just think you're being mean to them.

Second... There are MANY types of cat repellents. Some you spray ONCE and the kitty will stay away. Others you have to reapply every 24hours. The thought is..the kitty doesn't like the smell and once it gets used to the item always smelling like the spray, he or she will avoid it.

Third... Somebody mentioned kitty may be bored, or lacking a nutrient in it's diet. There are plenty of pet grasses you can buy that are already GROWN or you can grow it yourself. Kitties seem to love this stuff.

If kitty cat is bored you can get TONS of diffrent toys... do like you would for a dog and buy toys where you can hide treats or catnip(if you kitty likes catnip). I have about a bizillion kitty toys scattered about my apartment. BUT, kitties can be like kids...they do and will occasionally get bored with the same toys.

I know this is a lot on info(and there is tons more out there) but...usually a combo of these things will work well for you.

Use one method to protect, one item to introduce kitty to actually destroy, and maybe a few new toys.

    Hope some of this helps!!

She may now have found a new toy! Cats chew too.

Or she needs a different diet with a Catnip toy! (get her a nice buzz going on) Let her claw on cat posts. Does your cactus bloom? have a nice smell? Animals are like children, all of a sudden it's a new thing.

If she gets a prick from it in her face or worse eye, wow, a Vet. visit is in order.

For her safety move the cactus.

Take a small pot and plant some grass seed.

My cat used to eat anything that was green and growing until I started keeping fresh grass for my cat. Now that I have the grass around, she doesn't attack any of my other plants or flowers.
