    Default Jean Le Pen

It will be extremely curious to see how Jean Le Pen makes out in the upcoming French election, given his socially and fiscally 'conservative' positions.

^^^ well, he's certainly a hard line conservative. But he's also a French politician with a significant (and growing) base of supporters.

(snip)"Le Pen said people with immigrant backgrounds who commit crimes should be stripped of their French nationality and sent "back to their country of origin."

Reminded that the vast majority of youths taking part in the arson and rioting are French, born in France to immigrant parents, he said: "What does that mean? Are they French because they have a French identity card?"

French nationality should be given only to those who ask for it and "who are worthy of it," he said. "Those who got nationality automatically, who don't consider themselves French and who even say publicly that they consider France their enemy should not be treated as French."

Le Pen said he is convinced that what he described as a surge in support for his "zero immigration" platform would translate into votes at the ballot box for his National Front party.

French voters "are saying to themselves 'Le Pen was right. We were told that Le Pen is an extremist because he said that immigration problems would lead to disorder. The facts have shown that he was right,'" he said. "(snip)

Le Pen is also starting to gather major support from French who are looking towards improved security in their own daily lives, as well as a reduced tax burden ...

(snip)"Le Pen's platform calls for drastic measures such as pulling France out of the European Union and shutting its borders and welfare state to immigrants. Curiously, though, he has gained a foothold in the very immigrant communities he has described as a menace to the future of France. He has reached out to French citizens of immigrant origin, arguing that they are the front-line victims of excessive immigration, crime and disorder.

"There are many voters for Le Pen in the projects," said Rossi, the political journalist. "All of the French who live in those areas, and many French people of Arab origin as well. The psychology is simple. These are people who are well-established in France, especially businessmen with apartments, families, and they deal every day with the problems of the youth in the projects. And they want authority and security."

One of France's prominent Muslim leaders, Kamel Kabtane, agreed in a recent interview that Le Pen had acquired some support in immigrant communities. Kabtane, an immigrant from Algeria who is the imam of the main mosque in Lyon, said the grizzled candidate had managed to solidify his party's strength by being consistently frank and outspoken.

"He says out loud what the others say very quietly," Kabtane said. "And I think we must do everything possible to prevent him from being elected."(snip)"

My own interest in French presidential politics is only to see whether the increasingly Socialist trend of the past decade has finally piled up enough negative political and economic side effects for the French voters to now back a major change in direction.

Of course Le Pen's conservative party gains in France are not unique in western europe either ...

(snip)" Anti-immigrant sentiment is spreading across Europe, boosting support for populist, right-wing parties. One of the most successful is in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium. Backers of the party, known as Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest Party) criticize Muslim immigrants for failing to assimilate.

In the Vlaams Belang's stronghold of Hoboken, on the outskirts of Antwerp, the party soared in local elections last month. It won 41 percent of the vote, far ahead of all other parties."(snip)

well, it looks like Jean LePen is out of the running. However, as this news story states, part of the reason for his low percentage is that Nicholas Sarkozy has adopted many of Monsieur LePen's conservative ideas where economics and law & order are concerned.
