    Burlesque music

Having trouble finding really sexy music for a burlesque inspired show - it specifically has to be music from the 1920's/30's
I know there are a few burlesque performers and a lot of music buffs on these boards so hopefully someone can help me out!!!

Shivas Regal is an old favourite, Sonny Lester. I'll think of some more later.

Can the music be from the 40's as well???
Be very careful if you make a woman cry, because God counts her tears. The woman came out of a man's rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved."

For a Burlesque inspired show you don't need to limit yourself so much with the music! You would be surprised as to what passes as "burlesque" music

I used Fever by Peggy Lee. You can easily use any modern version of this song and people would still "get it" that you are doing Burlesque.

Oh Daddy which had Gwen Stefani in the song doing a duet with someone else (the other artist escapes me).

Some CDs I would recommend (or at least have a listen to the samples provided on Amazon.com so you can get some inspiration)

Tease!: The Beat of Burlesque - Various Artists
Take It Off! Strip Tease Classics - Various Artists - Jazz - Swing/Big Band
Burlesque Tribute to Christina Aguilera - Various Artists

All I got to say is that even with certain modern songs you can do Burlesque. Burlesque isn't about being limited to music from a certain age... it allows you to be sexy, shimmy, bump and grind and all that jazz to music from 'back then' and now.

This is a director's request that we only perform with music from the 20's and 30's - I suggested doing peggy lee but it was rejected. I guess he knows what he wants so I must abide - thanks for the suggestions though.

    Check this site out: http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit/1920m.html

It has a huge listing of 20s songs. You might want to check out musicals of that era, as well.

And this site has listings of top 20 songs from 1920 on up.

Fanny was one of the Zigfeld comedy acts in his Burlesque themed Zigfeld Follies.

Also look up any of the BIG BANDS like Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and so on as they had some of their biggest hits during the 1930's.

Al Jolson was the biggest act of the 20's (Mammy)

Last night when I was trying to get to sleep I was thinking about this thread.

Songs from the 20's are going to be next to impossible to come by. The reason...the records back then were carbon not vinyl and were played at speeds no less than 78 rpm.

Carbon records need a grammaphone or special record player in order to play the music....My father has one and these old carbon records this is how I know about this stuff.

Carbon records were in use during the 30's as well but the push towards newer materials to record songs on was well on it's way.

Also movies of the 20's were silent, "talkies" didn't come into being until the 30's. Movie soundtracks could be lifted from the movie reels so long as the film itself was in tact. This is another reason music of the 30's has been better preserved than music from the 20's.

Your "director" is being insanely difficult in limiting you and as such should provide you with a set list to choose from if s/he is going to be so anal retentive about it!
    IMHO

You want only music from these two decades then you provide it sweetheart...or let me use music appropriate to Burlesque that I can actually obtain~!

Look into the Boswell Sisters, a 30s 'girl group' who played piano and sang.

Random trivia about them:They always did their performances sitting down because one of the gals was physically disabled from polio.

Try almost anything by Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald. There's also a great song called "Sugar In My Bowl" by Nina Simone; it's from the late 1960's but I guarantee your director won't be able to tell. I'd love the opportunity to do an old-fashioned striptease to it.

I'm sorry but I must say I'm laughing at some of these song suggestions...

What about the song Makin' Whoopee?

Or 'Brother can you spare a dime"?

Man, all the good shit really came out in the 40s.
