Default I need a really good painkiller

I ran out of my Naproxen I usually use when my back gets bad...My doc doesn't like to give it to me because she's all "just keep up with your yoga". Anyway...every time I get into exams my back gets so brutally sore...It's because of all the sitting, and yeah I get stuck on time and neglect my excercises. Plus, working/ horse riding are back aggravators, but that's life.

But it's so bad right now I can't even concentrate on studying, and can't sleep for the pain, etc. I've taken extra strength advil and it hasn't helped.

I know it'll probably pass when I get out of exams and can move around more (sitting is death), but I can't not sit around and study right now because my exam is on Sunday...but oww.

So, what's fool proof and legal? I want to be numb, and the ice isn't doing the job.

I can't go to my doc before Sunday because it's closed, and I don't want to waste time at a walk-in if I don't have to. Is there anything over the counter?

    Thanks!

Well valium and percocet are legal, and they always help me... but if ur doc won't prescribe, idk. Maybe you could take some tylenol pm or advil pm to help you sleep, and use one of those stick-on heat pads from wal-mart to ease your muscles during the day. And if naproxen helps you, I know aleve has naproxen, and there are probably generic over the counter naproxen products as well. Good luck, hope you feel better..

Well, aleve is a milder version of naproxen, maybe try that? Other than that, idk, I hope you feel better though.

Tylenol 3 with codeine works for me when I get migraines. Don't think it's over the counter though--the good pills rarely are.

You may also want to look into accupuncture--it is very effective in releiving chronic pain. A good accupuncturist is also trained in "cupping"--which draws blood into damaged areas, lesions, and scar tissue and promotes healing. I had quite a bit of scar tissue in my back from a nasty fall off my horse that was causing me problems. Deep tissue massage, accupuncture, and cupping helped.

I think she means what can she walk in a purchase at the drug store.

I have bad back pain however, not as bad you do ..hugs to you

    I can only imagine.

Excedrin for body aches ( by the flu kind! ) anything to do with flu aches and pains. I keep that shit on point here. When I have cramps I take it. It seems to work the best and has no caffiene.

A warm bath . , body flu meds... coupled with some nyquil and a heating pad you should be at least tolerable of it.

if not take your ass into the ER and pitch a fit., you might get a lil' something

I've had plenty of experience with back injuries from my stunt woman days.

Naproxen and flexoril (particularly flexoril) are the best prescriptions for muscle pain hands down but you can get close with OTC drugs.

The best over the counter remedies are Aleve (close to naproxen) or Motrin. If you take 600mg of Motrin (not 200 or whatever the box says) it becomes a prescription dose. Be careful with taking too much for too long it can fuck up your stomach lining and give you ulcers. I found Motrin (Ibuprofin) to be much more effective than Tylenol for my muscle pain. But depending on how your body reacts you could be the opposite. About 1000mg of Tylenol numbs almost any pain in my body. I've used it after surgeries when I run out of codeine (which is my wonder drug). I've heard you can do about 2000-3000mg a day without any issues and that after about 4000mg you might have problems. I like to stay as far away from those numbers as possible though. I'm assuming its the muscle thats bothering you since Naproxen is usually prescribed for that. In addition to the pills I always use a heat pad -it does wonders I swear! Try switching to heat from ice. If shes suggesting yoga its the type of muscle injury where working out and continuing to stretch and work the muscle will speed recovery so try to do some of that.

I've never tried Excedrin for body aches. I only use it for migraines since taking imitrex freaks me out. I'm not a fan of powerful pills and try to avoid them as much as possible, but sometimes you gotta take something

This is all my personal experience and I have nooo medical insight into this whatsoever. I try not to take pills unless I have to so I don't become tolerant. You can ruin your stomach and poison your liver with OTC stuff easily. Use common sense like don't take it more than every 8 hours BUT if after four hours your in pain switch to a different kind -- like from motrin to tylenol.

Man, back pain sucks! I'm sorry to hear its bugging you. My experience with it is that once you fuck up your back it is never the same again.

Thanks for all the input...I tried double dosing the Motrin extra strength, plus heat/ cold packs, and the stretches my physiotherapist gave me back in the day. It's helping. I know I get too distracted to keep up with my maintenance routine, and if I do that for too long the little bits of pain suddenly become almost crippling.

I injured my back once from a horse fall too, Paintbaby! And then I reinjured it wrestling in competition, because I was dumb...I need to watch it. It definitely is my Achilles heel, but not really a heel...bad metaphor. Anyway...I'll keep those other pills and acupuncture in mind for future as well, I just don't have the time right now, and I also need something that doesn't make me drowsy since i have so much studying to do...

so thanks, and back to study notes I go!

There's a new alleve out- back and body. My dad has sciatic pain, which he refuses surgery for, and he says it's been a Godsend.

    Didn't think of this^^, but it's a valid point, if you're desperate.

Aleve (Naproxen) isn't availble OTC in Canada... only by prescription.

You could try Robax Platinum it has Ibuprophen and also a muscle relaxant to help with stiffness. Robaxacet is similar but has Acetaminophen for pain relief.

You can buy Tylenol 1s OTC but you have to ask for them. Then you are getting into codeine and that wouldn't be so good if you are trying to concentrate/study.

If 600mg of Motrin doesn't work I do up to 800mg. Pay attention to the mg/ pill and not just number of pills taken.

Ice packs work best during the first 72 hours after an injury because you are trying to control swelling and more damage. After that heat packs should be used to help sooth the muscle.

I'm not sure what drugs are different in OTC availibility in Canada. If all else fails I'd just smoke some herb. I'm not sure if thats a legal alternative for you though.

If you need something OTC and don't have to stay awake, try either Tylenol PM or Percogesic. Both make me fall asleep. At least you'll sleep through the pain.

^^For some reason this pain is impervious to Tylenol and Advil...and I'll take way more than I'm supposed to...I've even taken my mom's Tylenol with codeine, and it didn't really help all that much.

Susan- I might take you up on that offer if my doctor continues to be silly! We only have the blue wrapper Bounty bars around here...they're pretty awsome though.
