    Default College Introductions

So during the first class of any semester, usually everybody goes around the room and introduces themselves to their classmates and says what they do for work, fun, etc...I'm thinking of just telling everyone I'm a waitress or something, but people always want to know WHERE! I live in a town w/three stoplights and go to school at a campus center that has six classrooms. I drive the hour to work at the closest club (in Buffalo NY)....I don't feel uncomfortable sharing my profession, but I don't know what I should do to shield myself from the barrage of interrogations that are sure to follow, and I also don't want to scare my surrounding rednecks, as they are an easily ruffled bunch who are considered 'downright rebellious' for being in 'that school' to begin with...especially if they happen to be female...I'll figure something out, but I did want to ask,

Do you feel uncomfortable discussing what you do in group situations such as these?

I don't tell anyone and don't see any reason to. people are too judgemental and it really is never relevant to situations I encounter where people ask what I do. It will most likely change the entire subject matter of conversation.

You could always tell them that you are a stay at home mom and attending classes in your spare time.

You can say you work in a small corner bar part time.

You can say you don't work at all, you are fully concentrating on school.

You can say you help take care of someone in your family.

    The possibilities are endless.

Or you could say you babysit/nanny in your spare time, then nobody will ask where.

I told people I was a promotional model on the weekends. It was technically true, because I did it 2 weekends a month. It was always out of town, I could be vague about it if I needed to be, and nobody ever gave me a hard time about it.

Yes, either say that you don't work/that you nanny/that you bartend at the bar you really work at and if someone shows up then they'll be just as embarassed probably and keep quiet about it. Or you could just tell the truth. If they judge you for it, then they are small minded people who's opinions you shouldn't be bothered with.

And we all know that stripping is a lot like babysitting. So you are really not lying too bad.

I always said I was a stripper, but I seek attention and stir up controversy like that.

You can say whatever you want. There are a hundred jobs you could be doing where they can't ask you where. You do data entry from home, you sell on ebay, you clean houses, whatever. Or you don't work at all.

I wouldn't want to tell a room full of strangers. At school, I only ever told people I thought were my friends. In the end I always regretted opening up because they invariably turned into assholes.

Make-up something, anything at all, but save yourself the hassle and don't tell the truth.

I always just say my name, my major, what year I am in school, and something interesting about me. It's like a one minute intro...it's not that deep. Don't let it get to you like that.

Definitely don't say anything about your work when your GPA's at stake. I mean, technically your professor is "supposed" to be non-biased. But you never know how certain positions/mentalities/discomforts with theirselves will be unleashed through passive aggressiveness.

Plus, it could be beneficial to keep the 2 environments separate, just for some mental clarity and concentration.

In those situations, I don't tell people about the job I have that actually pays the bills. I talk about the things I get to do because I DON'T have to worry about those bills. My volunteer work and hobbies. If you like making model airplanes, tell people you get paid to do it on ebay. Or why not just shrug and say you're a full time student, like lots of people?

A big part of it is remembering all of the other bits of non-i'm-a-stripper-ness that also compose you. Your pets and hobbies and passions and the things that people wish they had more free time for.

umm... how about something REALLy easy... like, "i'm self-employed." which you are. There. Vague, no lying, pass it on to the next person. If someone wants to talk to you about it later, THEn you can tell/not tell/lie/promise to explain when you know them better, whatever.

Susan, that rocks. I have found myself doing the same, sometimes simply to see the reaction. But I wouldn't share in the classroom... you just never know.

I don't tell people what I do for work. It's none of their business. I'll introduce myself as a full time studend and that is enough I think.

    Me too!

Also, I think it really quickly shows if a person is the type of person (openminded, non judgemental) I want to get to know and be pals with!

plus, it shocks people!!! (well, less now that I'm a barbie )

I always tell people I'm something ridiculous like magician's assistant or arms dealer, by then they think I'm such a bullshit artist that I can say I'm a stripper and they wouldn't believe me.

Hey, that would be kind of a cool job... tell people you scout flea markets/yard sales for collectibles/vintage stuff for consignment. Then people can't ask to come visit you since there's not really a "where."
