    PMS Insomnia?

A few days before my period, I always have a night when I can't go to sleep, I feel restless and nervous, and I can't focus on anything. I usually spend the time reading in the bath but I'll run a bath, read awhile, let it drain, go to bed, get up, run another bath, wander around, take a different book into the bath, let it drain, go to bed, get up, get on the computer, go take a bath... I keep thinking about all the things I'm not doing but there's nothing I WANT to do.

I get this every month but it's only a single night a month, about 4 or 5 days before I start bleeding. Does anyone else get this? Or am I just weird?

Nope. It isn't just you. I get the same thing, too. Waking up, not getting back to sleep, feeling anxious, brain racing---I get it all. Thankfully, it is only a couple of days out of the month--I sleep very restfully every other time.

What helps for me is having a warm bath or shower right before bed, as hot as I can stand, and then massaging pure lavendar essential oil into my temples. Wearing socks to bed to keep the feet warm help, too. As does a cup of linden flower tea--that stuff knocks me right out. I also lay off the caffeine during that time as well. Laying in bed and reading is also a good way to wind down. I find that these things take the edge off a bit, and I'm able to settle in for a few hours of uninterrupted rest.

Insomnia is a normal symptom of PMS.

I haven't wrapped my head around the whole thing yet, but it has to do with estrogen levels, which are greatly affected by your liver and intestines and even your dopamine and hypothalamus. My friend Darcy (who's a very good herbalist) made me a tincture that's helping all my PMS and thyroid-ish stuff a lot.
