    Default medical strength retinol A

I have just been given medical strength retinol A by my doctor to reduce hormonal pigmentation. I have to use it every second night for a few weeks and then every night.

He warned me that my skin might flake/peel at first.

Now I am working tonight and my skin is red and flakey yuk!

My boyfriend said its not very visible under my make-up.

My skin feels all tight and dry - like sunburn kind of.

Has anyone else used retinol A. How long does this side effect usually last? I forgot to ask my doctor. I hope it stops soon.

I've never gotten past the side effect of having tight, dry and very flaky skin. Mine was so bad I couldn't apply makeup over it. I'd slather on a thick moisturizer and slap some makeup on. 10 minutes later my face looked like cracked leather. I used it for about 2 months before I tossed it in the drawer and gave up.

I put off using it for a while but I recently got a prescription for it again in hopes of trying it a second time. My acne is finally gone *knock on wood* and I'm just trying to reduce scaring now.

I've had good luck applying it heavily two days in a row on like a Wed/Thur and then letting it peel Fri/Sat/Sun. By Monday I can apply makeup over it. It seems to be working really well though. I have heard the lecture about applying it only a few times a week for the first few weeks and then every night for the next four months. I just can't have my face peel Mon-Thur. Its pretty nasty on me. I think every other night would have killed my face if I did that all the time. Two days sends it into complete shock and I get great results in just a weekend. I suggest you play around and see how your skin reacts.

I wonder if anyone else has had better results with it? My skin is over the top sensitive so I'm probably a bad example.

Yep. I live on it pretty much...tons of sun damage.

After a few weeks (if that long) you will stop peeling and looking red. Serioulsy, you can cut back and use it only once or twice a week to start. This will help, then work your way up.

Also many people just can't tolerate Retin A. Stay out of the sun...

It worked really well for me in terms of both acne and pigmentation. The redness and dryness subsides after a while of using, I only get a little peeling now after a few months. I think your skin sort of adapts to the side affects. Oh, and it only took a few weeks to subside for the most part.

    Worked really well for me.

I could peel a layer of nose off, blackheads and all. (Then run around showing my roomates 'this is the top layer of my skin! gross!).

It was totally weird and gross while peeling.

I just had IPL treatments to treat pigmentation and then found out that IPL doesnt work to treat hormonal pigmentation so now i am trying this in my quest for porcelan skin!

I used it again last night and on the other night I used a really intensive moisuriser. It still feels tight but seems that its not peeling around my nose as much.

Does it work on wrinkles? Reason I am asking is coz the lines near my mouth are peeling more than every other area and Im hoping its working on the wrinkle.

Get a good moisturizer with a high SPF.

It is the only proven wrinkle reducer. Just make sure you are adequately protected from the sun, or the damage will be SEVERE. Also, it won't work overnight, I think I've heard 6-12mos, even up to 2 yrs for full results. Some of my friends are on Retin-A & Taz (slightly modified form) and the results are miraculous. Makes skin glow from within like you are 18, also seemed to help with tone, fine lines, tightness, everything. Some new studies also suggest that it is good for preventing skin cancer if used from a young age.

As soon as I'm done nursing, I'm getting IPL and going on Retin-A.

    Hope this Helps!
