Default Lets get gas prices down!!

In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

This was originally posted on Myspace, but I figured why not bring it here too!? I don't know how much it applies to those outside of the states, as I do not know how much gas is or isn't... So this is mostly geared toward Americans, but hey everyone can do it!!

On May 15th 2007, I'm asking everyone who reads this to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

    S
o please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

This gets passed around every year, and it has never worked.

A better idea is finding out who the major supplier of gasoline is in your area & boycott them. If enough people avoid buying gasoline from them, they'll lower their prices- causing all others in the area to follow suit, because prices tend to rise & fall together.

Or you can carpool or walk...People don't even consider this enough...

I don't drive. But I disagree with the rise in prices. I just wanted to share that... and yeah I know it gets passed around every year, but I still think that if a handful of people do it it might help at least a little. Wishful thinking maybe.

It's a nice idea, but I live in the mountains, over 20 miles (about a 35 minute drive) from the nearest gas station. If I'm in town on May 15, and I happen to need gas, this ain't gonna stop me from going to the pump.

Moreover, the idea is completely non-sensical to anyone that understands how refining works.

Greatly simplified, gas station owners don't exhibit control over the price of gas, with the exception of perhaps a nickel a gallon (and that's me being generous--it's usually about three cents a gallon profit to the station). When a station owner buys a delivery of fuel, it's at the current, present-day market price. If the price of oil--or for that matter, refined fuel--drops precipitously for any reason, he still has to pay the original price per gallon on his original fuel delivery, until such time as he sells his existing stock and he buys more fuel at the new, adjusted market prices. This is why price drops in fuel are gradual, but price increases are almost always more immediate.

More than that even, there are no massive stores of fuel sitting out there in Nebraska waiting to be sold; refined fuel is extremely time-to-market sensitive because no producer wants to make more fuel than the market can support, otherwise prices fall very quickly. So refiners are essentially just making enough to support demand with very little cushion for supply shocks like refinery fires or retooling.

Notice how no one cared about any of this when oil was $10/bbl and gasoline was $1/gallon? Low oil prices are just as much an energy crisis as high oil prices. It's a pay me now or pay me later situation.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

We should just start using solar power. Corn sounds nice and earthy and woo hoo environmental but it's just as bad as oil (maybe not really seeing as I dont see a war starting over corn, but it's still pretty bad) Why cant we just have solar cars?!

Why? What good would that do? They'll just make it all back, and then some, on May 16th or whenever we need gas again, because selfish, greedy, entitlement oriented people don't want to give up their gas guzzling babies. You know, the ones that they drive to the mall...by themselves...all while talking on their cell phones the whole trip.

What would be far more effective would be people making habits into using less gasoline EVERY DAY, like say any of the following:

    1. Drive less. If a short trip (including your work commute) can be safely achieved on foot or bicycle...then use your feet. Besides that, the exercise will be good for you.
    2. Stay out of the drive-thru lanes at restaurants when they're crowded. Think of how much gas you waste sitting there with the car idling.
    3. Avoid rush hour traffic if possible. The less time it takes to make a trip, the less time your car is on, the less gas it uses.
    4. Keep your car's maintenance in order. You'd be surprised what a tune-up fresh air filter, and properly inflated tires can do.
    5. Only use the accessories like the heater and A/C when you absolutely need them.
    6. Bunch your errands on a single day and take care of them all on a single trip. Incorporate them into your to/from route to work if possible. Plan your route ahead to get the shortest route.
    7. If possible, use public transportation or carpool. On top of saving gas, it relieves congestion on the roads.

    And perhaps most importantly...

    8. Trade in that gas guzzling extension of your penis (and before anyone asks, yes this applies to all them 'soccer moms' too) for a practical vehicle that gets decent gas mileage. That big ol' SUV is waaaaay overrated.

Furthermore, stop blaming the oil companies, the gas stations and the oil cartel in the Middle East and start pointing that finger of blame in the mirror where it belongs.

Needless to say, with India and China using more energy, I doubt this will cause a fall in gas market prices, but it will give you the end user an edge on coping with the new reality. High prices for a commodity aren't so hard to deal with if you find ways to cut consumption. It beats the hell out of sending pointless chain letters.

I agree with Glamazon. I live outside of Tucson and have to drive at least 20 miles to get into town everyday, so if I need gas on the 15th, I'll get it. I'm also a delivery driver, so I use a lot of it!

"Walk"? What is this "walk" of which you speak? We live in a nation where 2/3 of us are overweight or obese. The majority of us walk less than a mile a day. Oh, America. You kill my hope.

...or motorcycles... if more people rode bikes, not only would gas consumption be better, but you'd get where you were going faster, you get to use te carpool lane, and people would become BETTER drivers be becoming more aware of everything around them.

    then i got pregnant.

If ANY kind of boycott would work, wouldn't it be more effective to just channel one of the more powerful companies....I don't know but lets say Exxon - nobody buys Exxon for like two months.......exxon would have to drop their price and everyone would go back go getting exxon so the other people would have to drop their price too?

Mind you I know absolutely nothing about that industry.

Not to sound like sophiemarie, but...

On the day of George W. Bush's first inauguration in January 2001, the average price of a gallon of gas was 96 cents.

That one has also been debunked. In fact, that would likely make gas prices go UP even more.

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/gasout.asp

A boycott of a couple of brands of gasoline won't result in lower overall prices. Prices at all the non-boycotted outlets would rise due to the temporarily limited supply and increased demand, making the original prices look cheap by comparison. The shunned outlets could then make a killing by offering gasoline at its "normal" (i.e., pre-boycott) price or by selling off their output to the non-boycotted companies, who will need the extra supply to meet demand. The only person who really gets hurt in this proposed scheme is the service station operator, who has almost no control over the price of gasoline.

The only practical way of reducing gasoline prices is through the straightforward means of buying less gasoline, not through a simple and painless scheme of just shifting where we buy it.

It's gonna be sad when I have to tell my grandchildren of the 'good old days' when $10 would buy you two gallons of gas...
