Default Dog Has A Cough. Suggestions?

I bought a new dog from the shelter on Sunday. I was aware when I purchased her she had a cough, kennel cough I believe, and I was sent home with 2 days of cough suppressants (she had been on them for 2 days already, so a total of 4 days) and 2 weeks work of anitbiotics. Yesterday was her last dose of cough suppressants, so she is just on antibiotics now. Today her coughing has been really bad, like she'll cough for 5 or so minutes laying down when she comes inside, a lot more then when she was on the suppressants. Is this normal when you go off the suppressants? Will it go away with the antibiotics? Or should I contact the shelter and request more cough suppressants.

Kennel cough shouldn't be so persistent. Is she ingesting all of her antibiotics? Sometimes dogs get tricky and spit out pills when you're not looking, or the like. I'd say give a call to your vet and describe the symptoms, or if she's still coughing after the antibiotics have run out, get her checked. It could be something else, like allergies or respiratory issues.

Yeah I watch her eat them, I can hear them crunch when she gets her peanut butter. It might also the cold weather here, it's been colder than usual, might be affecting her.

These posts really piss me off.

"My dog is sick, she lays down and coughs her lungs out for 5 minutes, what ever am I to do?"

Take her to the vet? Do you really need advice to figure that out?

    Incredible.

Ummm excuse me, but I love my animals. I was sent home with medication which I have been giving her and was told that was all she needed. This coming from a vet mind you. I did exactly what the VET said, and now I'm just wondering if it's normal for the cough to come back for alittle bit when off suppressants. Not a weird question at all.

Your dog needs to see a vet.

Are you a vet? If you are I'll excuse your incredible rudness. There are better ways to voice your opinion/concern other than being rude.

I would just take her to your Vet. I have gotten animals from shelters before and It seemed like they were always sick. I never trust anything that the shelters say. Thats just my experience with shelters.

Yeah they can be sketchy, but this one is pretty damn good. If it keeps up for the day I'm taking her in tomorrow. She doesn't seem to cough if she doesn't spend lots of time in the back yard when it's cold.

Keep her inside....where it is nice and warm. The cough will just get worse if she is outside.

Yup keeping her on the bed with a heating pad under the blankets on the lowest setting. She seems to be enjoying herself lol.

I found this on a site and thought it may be useful to you. I hope your dog is healthy agian real soon

Dogs cough for a variety of reasons, some of which can be serious in themselves and others that are signs of an underlying problem. Internal parasites, heartworm disease, distemper, fungus diseases, tuberculosis, allergies, and pollutants such as cigarette smoke can cause dogs to cough.

Coughs are triggered by irritants in the air passages and can be characterized as dry and hacking; moist and bubbly; gagging; wheezy; harsh; or weak. It can be frequent, chronic, or intermittent, and is often self-perpetuating as it dries the throat and leads to further irritation.

Also, the 'cough supressants' are likely steroids, which only mask symptoms, but they won't cure the problem. So yes, the cough coming back is not unheard of (i'm not dissing steroids, they definitely have their uses, but they have this tendency to make the problem go away only temporarily).

But my recommendation would be to just call the vet office with the symptoms, and see what they say. I worked for a vet for three years, and I know they're policies: they should be able to tell you whether or not you need to bring her in. That said, respiratory symptoms need to be carefully monitored. If it doesn't get better soon (48 hours) get her checked.

If you have the time/ money, just bring her in to be on the safe side, if you can.

This is normal. Contact the shelter tell them she needs more suppressents, as this is like cough medicine to us. It's easier on her. Also, Kennel cough can take a month to get rid of. She may need another round (or different ) antibiotics too.

My Pit Bull (when i was 27) had it bad. It took trial and error to clear it up, it's a bitch at times. And scary, they go into spells where the cough seems to really knoock them. It's going to go away, but take time.

Yeah I hope it doesn't take forever, but it might. She hasn't been fixed yet because she had the cough when she came in (they only had her for two days) and didn't operate due to the sickness. She's scheduled to go in to get fixed around May 20th, so I'm hoping she'll be well enough then.

Where I am the kennels won't even let you look at the dogs if they have a cough. They just quarantine they off. This was the case when I was looking for a dog a few months back. I guess different areas have different regulations. So I'm not really sure but good luck!

That's how it is there as well but it's hard to catch it in time because it gets spread by people touching one that has it and then touching another, not using hand santizer, etc. Before they get around to checking, they already have it.

I agree. They should have never let you adopt her until she was over the kennel cough.

When you say she's laying down and coughing for five minutes at a time it sounds like you're talking about a deep, chest rattling cough? I mean, you didn't really say, but that's the only kind if five minute coughing I can visualize? If so that could be more than an upper respiratory problem (which is what kennel cough is). (I'm not a vet, I's just a stripper).

Call the vet.. they'll either give you more cough medicine or tell you to bring her in.

^^^ yea Lena kennel cough is nasty. I have been through it. They will cough and hack and not get up if they have it bad enough. We honestly thought the dog was having an asthma attack. But the meds. finally kicked in and he got better, but it can put them down for the time being.

I dont know my about kennel cough. But maybe it would be a good idea to see an independent vet in case the shelter is just trying to cover their arse.
Im not saying that they are but just in case.

I hope your dog gets better soon, i hate it when animals are sick it makes me sad coz they cant tell us how bad they are feeling.

Yup like Pamela said it's brutal. She just basicly coughs coughs coughs and then dry heaves, and then starts over again.
