    Default That's my nig--uh brotha!

The founder of legendary hip-hop label Def Jam [Russell Simmons] has called for three sexist and racist words to be removed from songs.

Convenient, considering the wealth he's enjoyed through the marketing of that attitude and subculture.

^ I really don't see Russel Simmons, Run D.M.C, or Def Jam as being major contributers to the whole sexist, internal racism thing. I think he's pretty much always been very socially conscious, and his songs tended to be that way too.

I'm in complete agreement with him, but rap songs with those three words will continue to be made as long as enough people buy them. I'm still surprised that the netwoeks canned Don Imus.

Hmm... Do any of you dance to songs about "hos" or "bitches?" If so, why?

I was about to say the same thing!

I wish him the best however those terms are there for a reason as it is part of the sub-culture that uses those terms.

Just like geeks have their own lingo. So does the hip hop etc sub-culture.

They may be offensive words, but at what point do we draw the line? We have freedom of speech in this country.... if you don't like the words, don't listen to the songs. They're not played on public radio like that, anyway. I am not a fan of censorship!

Hell, I don't even like the term "Shorty" or 'Shawty', or whatever the fuck it is. It strikes me as being very demeaning.

But yeah, given the fact that so much of private or lapdancing is done to music picked by or for a wide variety of other women onstage while you are doing your private dances, you will wind up dancing to all kinds of music, regardless of preference.

The fact of the matter is, I would bet every dancer here has danced to songs with these lyrics at one time or another.

Of course you don't have a choice, lol! It wasn't meant as a criticism in any way, just a statement of fact.

The truth of the matter is, I would be far more guilty than any of you, for I have played all that shit at one time or another.

Just last night I played 50cent, whom I despise utterly for his attitude towards women, and because he was a crack dealer which everyone worships him for (he's 'genuine', whoopee shit, he still sold crack and hurt a lot of people by doing so).

But Angel loves 50cent, she's tipping me really well to play what she likes, and due to the language barrier I have a hard time figuring out what might be as acceptable to her. I play 'Magic Stick' because I like Lil'Kim, and 'Candyshop' because I can stand it, barely. Can't bring myself to play his other stuff, though, lol...

Sorry I was not trying to criticize you in anyway! If I can off a little stong I am sorry.
    I just agree with you,

    Oh no offense taken!

It's so easy to misunderstand each other sometimes when writing, when we don't know the tone of voice, body-language, and background of the other person writing. Sometimes it's easy to get the wrong idea. Some of my very closest friends on SW have been members with whom I have had misunderstandings, since we didn't really know each other.

We are all on the same side, though--working in the clubs makes this so, no matter whether we fuss at each other or not, lol...

He might get somewhere with this...hip-hop has been changing. If I'm now hearing about all the indie hip-hoppers that were on college radio breaking into the big scene, that's a good thing.

& Not that those words are the only powerful ones...Immortal Technique pisses everyone off with intelligent profanity, not crude terms.

This is such crap. I hate when people try to "shush" words that are offensive to them when they may not necessarily be offensive to other people.

Oh Man, MadMaxine, good point!!! I Love love love Immortal Techinique! Some of his lyrics err on the side of paranoid conspiracy theorist IMO, but it's all got a strong political ("I'm a mercenary, I don't care how I get richer; like American companies that did business with Hitler") and philosophical side that I dig the hell out of, really makes you think......"Dance with the Devil" GREAT song.....sick, sad, modern greek tragedy almost....awesome!!!....

he does offend with some nasty stuff too("That's your girl? Bitch get over here, gimme some brain; I'll bust off in her face, and right after this segment, she'll prolly' rub it in her pussy, try to get herself pregnant").....but geez, it's his right, isn't it?

Taking offensive words out of hip-hop won't solve a damn thing......I don't think Don Imus should've been fired for what he said (it was retarded, but not enough to end his career, with that supposed free speech we all have and such) and therefore I can't expect "bitches and ho's" to be removed from hip-hop.....I try not to be a hypocrite, and I believe in Free Speech, so I've got to defend the right for everyone to say whatever they choose, even if they do spout vile, disgusting filth....I always have the right to acknowledge (or not) what I choose.

I'm hoping that this works out. Personally, I'm just tired of all the recent music sounding the same and being about the same shit. Lyrics tell a story, and I'm bored by it now. No more surprises or originality. Hooray for someone setting the bar a little higher.

Ditto. A custy bought me that new Timbaland album.. and I like the beats... but the n-word is seriously in EVERY SONG! I'm like, wtf?! Am I supposed to listen to this like it's cool? Of course, freedom of speech, blah blah blah... But I think they'd have a larger market if they took those songs out, IMO (I've retired that album and I plan on downloading the radio versions on limewire instead!).

I'm a tille late to this thread, and I haven't read all of it. But if a dj plays something like that while I'm on stage, I'll walk off. If I'm dancing, I'll stop. 20$ isn't gonna break me. And I'll be sure to discuss it with the dj wile I tip him minimum!

I'm proud of Russell. It is degrading to refer to a woman as a ho or a bitch. For it to be socially acceptable is not right by me.

I don't know the impact of the n-word when it is spoken as I am not part of the African American community. I just know it's wrong for me to say it due to its usage in history.

It'd be nice if we all start respecting each other.
