a good site to start out with is

For just about everything on the planet, there is help at about.com
It is also very US centric so will be of more help than some other sites.

^^^ there are tons of sites out there. Picking an appropriate handful mostly depends on what you're really looking for ...

www.usaa.com. I don't know if you have to be a member to access all the info they have. You can order free booklets from them too (at least if you're a member they're free!)

In about two years, I'd like to buy a house (most likely will have to be a condo if I stay in CA).
I am starting to look at www.hud.gov and
www.fanniemae.com. I'm just learning about the process and it's overwhelming.
I looked at my credit on www.myfico.com.
I'd like to learn more about investment vehicles, SEP IRAs and home buying.

I started my journey to financial literacy with David Bach www.finishrich.com I recommend his Automatic Millionaire and Smart Women Finish Rich books. His books are very easy to read for someone who doesn't have a lot of financial background. In Automatic Millionaire he writes out step by step HOW to budget, save, and finance your sep-ira.
Suze Orman's site is mostly a commercial site to sell her products, her books are good also.
I like Kim Kiyosaki's blog http://kimkiyosaki.blogspot.com/ and website www.richwoman.com
