Default Don't try this at home...

Even the thick-walled PVC pipes wobble too much if they are 9 1/2 feet tall.

Dammit, I thought I had my very own instant pole for 10 fucking dollars, lol!

Any of you know what I could put inside it to strengthen it? Another, thinner PVC pipe, maybe?

I'm still getting a nice pole eventually, but wanted to fool around with this first. 6-8 feet might work, 9 1/2 feet is definitely too much.

I think I could do the special trick on it, but it would be close to busting in the middle and me flying around jagged edges. I got about halfway up and felt it wobbling a bit more than I like to go full til

Broken PVC is SHARP. You could try a size of PVC down but it wont fit tight. Sorry man, if you wanna go cheap buy black pipe and sand it like crazy till its smooth

Yes be careful with the plastic shards!!!

Couldnt you just get a length of steel pipe? I remember someone here did that and cemented it in her garden few years ago. I think she said it cost under $15 for the whole lot - it definatly wasnt a lot of money anyway.

I paid $12 for a steel fence post from Ace hardware & we made a plywood stage. Must have cost under $75 total.

Look on EBay for secondhand poles.

Well the money's not really a problem, I've got plenty of that. Paying 400$ to have a really beautiful piece of brass with a steel lining, all the attachments to mount it, etc., would be well worth it--or a multipiece Superpole, which is what I'll probably wind up getting for ease of future transport and use.

I wanted to experiment with it anyway. Like the stairways to get up to my third floor loft are narrow and make doublebacks--I wasn't even sure if I could get a 10 foot length of anything up them. I can. I also wanted to experiment with methods of fastening the top of whatever pole I get to the big wooden beam that goes across the peak of the vault of the cedar ceiling. If I get brass I'm going to have to do this anyway, and I can see it will take some work.

Plus the idea of having an instant pole was electrifying. I might check out the fencepost idea tomorrow before work, lol. I don't need a stage, and I'm lashing the top of it to the beam securely.

My club got some brass tubing for the expansion poles from a bigger town in the Keys about an hour away. If it has a steel lining I might drive up and get one there, other than that it's gonna be the Superpole.

Glass it in- fiberglass like a boat is made of. It'll be super strong if you glass it. By some sheets, tear it up in 1-2 inch pieces and apply resin over it. put about 3 coats of resin on it, doing each after the previous coat is completely dry.

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but you do mean on the outside, right? Like Long, spiraling lengths of it? That sounds like a good idea, then also I could paint it with whatever pattern or effect I wanted.

I like the idea, though it sounds messy--but no more messy than all the oil paints I'm going to have going here in a while if things go according to plan.

Another reason I went ahead and bought it is that you can do cool things with PVC pipe--sculpture, etc.

    do u pole dance?

i think its cool guys getting into it, my boyfriend tries out new tricks when i show him them. guys have good upper body strength which is good for pole dancing but they dont seem to like moves that involve gripping the pole between the legs...for obvious reasons...two things seem to get in the way.

Yeah, just like if you wre to Fiberglass in a transom of a boat. It'll be stronger than any pole around with a good 3-4 coats of resin set on top of the fiberglass. The only messy part of it is shredding up the fiberglass so you do it outside and sweep up the remnants. I really don't think it's that messy at all. the smell of resin is very powerful though so you definitely need a place with proper ventilation.

Maybe I should've been more specific! Yes, fiberglass the outside of the pole. You should be able to find a do-it-yourself guide to fiberglassing. Maybe just call your local fiberglass shop at one of the marinas and ask if that's possible and see how much they'd charge. It shouldn't be that much. Otherwise, just get the materials and do it yourself. You'd have the only fiberglass pole I bet! That'd be cool! Wait. That's a good idea!!! Maybe I should check into that.

The PVC pipe would evenually crack due to stress and would expose the cement.

I do pole tricks, I don't pole dance, lol...

I mean, a well-executed pole trick will be done with a certain grace and style, which comes from control, but I'm not into it to perform or be sexy for an audience, that's for sure. It's more of an acrobatic/gymnastic type thing with me, and I've probably done more pole tricks by myself at my old house than I have when people were around. I've seen a couple YouTube videos where the guys looked really gay, and that's not the way I do it at all.

I have a good camera now, so as soon as I get whichever kind of reliable sturdy pole going, I will post pictures so you can get an idea of what I am talking about.

That is a fucking good idea, actually. And now that I think about it, what a stupid question on my part, lol. I can just imagine someone trying to fiberglass the inside of a ten foot long, 2" PVC pipe!

I had some roommates who used to build shit with fiberglass and carbon fiber--one of them went on to manufacture airplane parts--he will be great to consult with too, I bet. It was messy and smelly, but so is painting with oils like I will be doing soon, and there's ways of dealing with it, probably with a pole this long outside is best.

Thanks so much for your advice, I think I might try this for fun!
