Default what is wrong with this thing?

I ordered a laptop from circuit city last month, i ended up having to go to philly for 2 weeks, and when i was gone it came in the mail. by the time i got back it had already been sitting there for about 12 days.(i had my roomate bring it in, not sitting outside lol) anyway, i was busy and didnt end up opening the box until anthor 3-4 days, i open it and turn it on and first off it took FOREVER to load. im thinking ok...so i set everything up on it and used it for awhile, everything was good for about 2 hours..it then freaked out on me and kicked me offline/everything went white and then it shut down on its own.

i turn it on and it worked fine again after about an hour or two online weird things happen, like the entire screen goes white or it will just show my background image and nothing will show up(like the things u click to get into ur music files or online) so im forced to shut it down and then turn it back on every 2 hours or so!! i tried to bring it back but you have to do that within 14 days and i waited to long(since i wasnt even home 12 of those days) so i cant do that. i know its not a virus or anything because i have 2 programs of spyware/virus that i run everyday. maybe someone dropped it or something? basically, the comp sucks and im out $1100 for something that i hate.

What is the brand and model?

You may want to try a Google search on the particular symptoms, too.

It will be a VAIO model (yeah, they use all capitals). There should be some other information, like a model number, either written on a place near the screen or on a label on the bottom.

Be careful not to drop it when you look.

One more thing, after product registration, you may have a factory warranty that still applies. You wouldn't be able to simply return it, but you may be able to get it repaired by Sony.

I have to go get a nap. If your problem isn't fixed by what you find, feel free to PM me or keep posting here, and I'll see if I can diagnose it for you.

It sounds like you've loaded too much stuff on the computer. The "shutting down on its own" is a usual symptom of having Auto Restart on System Fail turned on.

Once you find your specs post them up here. Most importantly processor/speed and RAM size/speed.

Its possible you just didn't buy enough beast for what you need.

call sony support asap. if the retailer's warranty is over (14-days?) sounds too short, maybe that's just for returns though.

imo you should still be able to get a replacement as long as it doesn't appear to have too much wear and tear. the manufacturer's warranty should still be in-place, especially for sony.

the call logs the date of the warranty, i.e. starts the clock. so get on the phone and make a call at least for help. they'll record it and at least oyu have it on record.

Time to take it back again, and this time open the box and start it up in the store before you take it home. Mention that you are discussing this problem on an Internet forum with thousands of users, all of whom will sooner or later be buying new computers, and that one guy in Utah has already decided never to buy a Sony based on your experiences. Wouldn't they like some positive publicity?

However, the taking a LONG time to start up the first time is not unusual. My new Presario did the same thing. The reason is that from the time the OS was isntalled at the factory until the time you start it up at home, umpteen gazillion updates to this and that have been released, and your computer is downloading and insatlling them all. When you shut down, it is going to download and install a bunch more.

If you use it every day, this will eventually only take a little of your time at shutdown.

    Good luck.

Updates might be later. A lot of these machines ask a few questions and then finalize the configuration, but others start slow simply because they have (1) a bunch of programs that want you to register them or (2) an antivirus program that's being too intrusive.

After that, you still have updates to download.

I wonder if the shift key just snaps into the place on the keyboard. Laptops have keyboards that are either really easy or really difficult to put together like that.

UtahMike is right about the negative publicity for both circuit city and sony VAIO. i think that is a good idea to bring up. the whole, i will be telling epople not to use your service/buy your product thing has worked wonders for me in the past.

    Love it!
