OMG, sometimes I wonder if people even use their brains, or think period.
Today was a shitastic day at work. I did 11 deliveries and only made $31.00 ($5 of that my boss gave me because she felt bad for the shitty tippers). Allows me to elaborate on this ass day.
Start off by coming in at 10:30am. There's only 6 drivers on shift today instead of the usual 10-12 for the daytime, so my boss says it should be good money today. However I know it's going to be a slow day when instead of 2 caterings to deliver right away, I only have one (as well as the other drivers), and it's not due until noon.
So I get to take 2 deliveries before I need to leave for my noon catering. First one was nice and gave me over 10% tip, so I was OK with my next run being a No Charge run where I got nothing. Well, I dealt with it, I wasn't OK with it. I don't deliver for goddamn free. So then I get another right before my noon catering, and it's at a residence. I deliver it to the customer, it's $19.07. He hands me a stack of cash and says "Here's $24, keep the change." I thank him and go back to my car to record my tip.
Looking at the money, it's only $19, not $24. The fucker didn't even give me enough to pay for his meal, and he had shut the door real fast on me. Not having time to go back because I needed to go back to work to pick up my catering, I took a quarter from my own car and put it in my money pouch, giving me an 18 cent tip which was mine anyways.
Then I go to take the catering out. The place takes longer than most runs to get to. it's also a big bill, $253, and I think I'll at least get 10%, which is standard. Even 5% since it's in a shitty part of town will do. So I set up at the place, am polite, friendly, etc. My presentation kicks ass. The customers rave about how nice the presentation looks, how well I did, etc.
They hand me a check for the order.
They left NO TIP. None. Since I can't solicit, or basically do shit to ask for a tip as it is against the rules, I smile through my teeth and leave.
Now for a mini rant:
Hello? I'm so sure that the fucking $3-$5 delivery charge that's tacked onto the bill seems to break the bank, but driver's don't see any of that! We rely on our tips! Fucking 10% is standard you bitches, just like any other tipped employee! I use my own car, put the miles and stress on it, get to my orders on time, and use my own gas so you don't have to fucking come get your own goddamn order! Fucking tip me! There's times I want to get there promptly, so by the time I'm at the customer's address in front of them I'm out of breathe. And sometime's people don't even tip then!
I see this as a familiar situation for a SC customer too. It's like a fucking custy paying cover to the club, and then getting a dance from a dancer and not paying! FUCK! She isn't the club, you paid the club, now you should pay your dancer for her fucking services!
Nobody says that my work HAS to have delivery services!
To top it off, most of the day people tipped less than 10% on their orders. I know I at least deserve this; even after only a week I am one of the top drivers already. Today was also full of a lot of less than a fucking $1 tips. Even if your order is less than $10, you should still tip more than a $1. I don't care if that's 10%; if someone actually used their vehicle to get you your food for your convenience, at least give them $2! The 18 cent tip was not even fucking worth it.
Do people even realize how taxing being a delivery driver is on the delivery driver's car?? Having to start the car and shut it off multiple times is bad for the starter, stop and go traffic isn't good either, and you put a shitton of miles on the car.
/rant.

It is a fine line we walk socially, because if you offer to tip the wrong person, they will be insulted.

just make sure you change back when you get back to the deli.
