    Default Vacation Alone?

Has anyone here ever gone on a vacation alone? I have a time share in Mexico and I'd hate to waste it, and none of my current friends have passports, and are too cheap to spend the measly 300 dollars on a rush passport, plus airfare. So I figure I'll just go alone.

I don't really plan on going away from the resort, it's more of a spa type place that I go to not like the usual Cancun party place. I really don't think I would mind going alone for a week, just bringing lots of books, and I don't have a problem eating by myself or entertaining myself. I can even go on stripper web in the vip loung on high speed for free.

The only concern I have is safety. And because I wouldn't really be leaving the resort other then to go to the marketplace which is just a short bus ride away the main concern for me would be just going from the airport to the resort. I speak some spanish but not fluently. I feel like my mother would have a real problem with me going and could possibly say no (she's the one that bought it for my sister her and me.) So is there anything that might ease her mind or should I just forget it?

I just gotta get away and I really miss Mexico and kind of have my heart set on it.

If you don't want to go alone, and you don't get a slew of offers here from people willing to go with you, you could always sell it on eBay.

I LOVE to vacation alone. I'm not going to say there's no risk, but if you're smart you can minimize your risk. Always carry a working phone, keep your head up, and stay in busy areas. Don't go wandering around at night in quiet areas. Call someone like your mom every day to check in, and tell them to call out the cavalry if you don't call by a certain time. Don't go off with strangers, and don't get shitfaced drunk. Basic common sense, yanno?

If this is in Cancun, don't worry about the language. They all speak English. IMO many of them have lived in the US before and then decided to go back home.

    Go for it.

If it were me, my main concern would be safety, especially because it is outside the U.S. I have done my fair share of travels alone and let me tell you even goingto Miami alone is a hardening experience. I guess there's a chance that nothing bad will happen to you. There's also a chance somehting will. And noone you know is close to you. I think it makes you an easy target to be a single young attractive female by yourself and people to know that where you are. be careful if you go and call people all the time.

I think I said this in another thread, but it bears repeating. I recommend to every woman to vacation by herself, safely, at least once in her life.

I've done it and took all the precautions Yek mentioned. There was nothing like it. I got to know myself again and didn't have to revolve around anyone else for once in my life.

I ate alone at the best restaurants and actually got to savor the food and people watch. Waiters and staff are usually very attentive to women alone.

I had many, many spa treatments. Read books and watched whatever I wanted at night. Ordered unhealthy midnight snacks etc.

Hell, I even had a fling (mentioned in yet another thread) with a foreign guy 15 years my junior!

Do it! I believe you'll enjoy the peaceful solitude and you'll come back with a renewed sense of self.

I hear ya, I have the same prob.... I love to travel and and have the means to do it easily, but no pal to match- my bf and gf's all have kids/fams or something that holds them back most of the time. Not that I mind doing things solo, I do- like sunning, swimming, and reading. But I like company for other things, like hitting the town, and without a buddy I think that is a lil dangerous, especially for pretty girls *sigh* If you have second thoughts about going alone you can PM me, or...

I've been checking out couchsurfing.com lately to see if that might be a good idea for me, maybe you could find someone local where you're going too. It's a network of people worldwide that offer their couches for crashing and/or will pal around with ya a bit, show you the sights and such.

Everyone should go on a vacation alone at least once in their lifetime. It is incredible. I took about 5 weeks last year and just drove around the west, hooking up with friends old and new.

I do like vacationing with others, too, but it is a very relaxing experience to go it alone. I highly recommend it!

Well my mother and I discussed it (I sound like such a momma's girl but she is my best friend and is concerned about me,) and we think it'll be great. The place where we go is very luxurious and we went last year and because we bought the time share agreement with them they made sure everything we wanted we got, so I am sure they would look out for my safety if they knew I was without a companion. Yay I am very excited. I am going to wait to read the Harry Potter book there so I can not have ANY interruptions..on the beach..with a mimosa.

Great! Im glad you decided to go. I just got back from Thailand alone and it was well worth the trip to go alone. The best part was having no itinerary to worry about if I had someone else around. I did whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. Youll love it being so relaxing alone.

Oh yea and dont tell anyone youre traveling alone. I also carried a whistle in case anyone tried to attack me the loud sound might scare them off. Yek's advice is all right on. Keep those words in mind. Most of all HAVE FUN!

When I went to Vegas a couple of years ago I did it alone. Whilst it was only 5 nights tops ... it was a huge deal for me as that was the first time outside of my own country I had travelled alone. It was such a fantastic feeling knowing I had done it and I had done it by myself.

Oh .. and not to mention I got to do what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. Didn't have to wait for anyone etc. It was a great little vacation.

Otherwise, I had travelled extensively alone within my own country - Australia. I love travelling by myself then again I am pretty independant.

I have vacationed alone several times, and every year during American Thanksgiving I go to the mountains in southern New Mexico and spend 3-4 days by myself. The place I go is isolated. Very much so. In fact it's a half day ride by horse from Cloudcroft, and there's no other way to get there.

I have adopted a few safeguards over the years. Some things I have picked up from travelling alone, either for business or for pleasure.

For instance, when approached by strangers at airports or train stations, I have a pretty good psycho act that scares away many potential muggers, clergymen, and on occasion even law enforcement officers.

With Hare Krishnas, poll takers, and panhandlers, I adopt what I call my "Hungarian Accent": "Sorry, I no unnnerstan' ze Eengleesh!"

And then there was the time at the airport in Houston when a woman approached me, introduced herself as a researcher for former congressman Tom DeLay. She explained that her boss was opposing a bill in Congress which would effectively allow federally subsidized abortions. Then she ended with, "But first, I need to ask you how to YOU feel about abortion?"

Now, I have never been pregnant, and if history is any proof, the likelihood is that I never will be pregnant, so asking me about abortion is like asking Patrick Buchanan about sex: Our opinions don't matter since we won't ever be directly involved.

But I answered her question with "How do I feel about abortion? Well, in congressman DeLay's case, it's too late."
My latest conspiracy theory: I am convinced that Dick Cheney is, in reality, Elmer Fudd.

I would love to go on vacay alone.. I mean, I know you're concerned about safety, but I think vacay is a time to max-relax. If you're concerned you can let local security in on the fact that you're minus a plus one, and make sure they keep an eye on you. Have fun tho, vacations are always well deserved!!

I'd love to vacation alone. I'm normally a really social girl, but once in a while I'll go through an introverted phase. Right now, I just want to hike by myself through some redwoods, go on a run barefoot down a beach, and fall asleep in a bed without the sounds of bums going dumptster diving, frat boys drunkenly and loudly stumbling down my alley, and roommates making as much noise as possible while they cook pancakes at 2 a.m after stumbling in drunk with their boyfriends.

I went to the UK by myself and had a great time....I got to do what I wanted, at my own pace, etc. At times I wished that I had friends there to talk with, but there were perks to being alone. I had lunch with a guy in the crypt/luncheon area of St. Paul's and enjoyed quiet moments in the Scottish Highlands, gazing at the scenery. I didn't feel unsafe at any point. However, being at the airports, waiting for planes, being on the planes alone bored me. If your time-share is in a safe area, or if you feel comfortable going it alone, then there's nothing wrong with it. On the other hand, if you think you'd be worried the whole trip, then it's up to you. Whatever you decide, have fun

Doesn't the spa provide a shuttle from the airport? If not you can always pre-arrange transportation with a reputable company.
