    Default Memory...

    Touch me
It's so easy to leave me
    All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
    If you touch me
    You'll understand what happiness is

    Look
    A new day has begun

When I was younger, there were times in my life I thought I'd remember fondly and other times in my life I thought I'd never remember. I thought my fondest memory of my marriage would be the lighthouse. Turns out, I can't stop talking about how much I loved my short trip to Chicago and how I think it's a beautiful city. I remember the buildings and architecture the most. The lighthouse can go fuck itself.

What are fond memories you have that you never thought would be 'fond' at the time?

Almost being expelled from high school two weeks before graduation. I was the editor of the literary journal and an avid vocal intellectual rebel; the principal was a nasty uptight Catholic matron who decided to censor certain elements she found "inappropriate." I called her a fucking fascist and read her the riot act about freedom of expression and threw a paperweight through her office window. (Nothing was broken, the window happened to be open.)

At the time I was furious and knew I was in deep shit. Ten years later it's one of my fondest high school memories. Good times. I was a hell of a kid, LOL!

Oh, also getting arrested for parking when I was 16. I was a geeky kid with a secret raging libido, and I was on my third date with the leader of our local chastity rallies, a nice young man my parents loved even though he wanted to be a priest. We were half-naked in a closed park past curfew when two police cruisers pulled up and switched on the lights. We got the full back-of-the-squad-car juvenile summons treatment and escorts home. At the time I thought I was going to suffer a violent death when I got home, but my parents were surprisingly cool about it. And the following Monday, I was a fucking HERO at school since I'd gotten Chastity Guy arrested for parking.

Funny, I just mentioned one of my fondest unexpected memories in another thread.

When Brad and I broke up last year and I ran away to Florida for a month alone. Thought it was going to be a mourning period but wound up being the best experience of my life.

Came back and was ready to return to my relationship on MY terms for the first time in my life. I became an enlightened, strong and very independent woman after that trip.

Going on a whale watch to Cape Cod in the 6th grade is something I'll never forget. We got to camp near the beach for a week or so and I got to take polaroid photos of whale fins and tails as they came up and out of the water. The thing I loved the most though was going on a little walk along the beach and tide pools and discovering a big ass horseshoe crab.

Another great memory I have is going to this small town carnival at night with my (now deceased) best friend, Louie. He was so good at winning goldfish we had like 6 of them and had to leave right away to get them all into containers. We lived together at the time and put all the fish on the living room shelves. Most of them died in about a week or so, but Patsy and Eddie lived for a few months. They were like our kids. lol

I have so many more great memories...I wish I had the time to type all of them out.

My trip around Europe lovingly sponsored by my best friends father. (Okay, so she threw a huge tantrum and said she no longer wanted to go if I couldn't afford to go, AFTER he mailed the 3500 non refundable check for her trip). But I will never forget a detail, down to the heavy scent of London rain, the dripping of Italian flowers, the torquoise of Cicilian (I can't spell that shit) waters. The Tuscan sun burning my shoulders. I loved every single thing that everyone else complained about. It was perfect.

Tracking a coyote and realizing we were going in a spiral.

Being stuck (because of a big storm) on the bank of the yukon river for two weeks and running out of food and subsisting on fish and sourdough that I made with yeast from the air and falling in love with this big old spruce tree and reading Anna Karanina in halves.

My foster mother who every morning said, "here, have a PBJ, it's the best thing you can have in the morning, better than a cup of coffee!" It was a short lived but happy foster home and remembering that makes me happy whenever I eat a PBJ.

Sleeping by Lake Kluane, which is one of the most beautiful places.

Doing a quest in a cave and every night a raven came to talk to me.
