I tried it with my home phone and my cell phone, and both worked. Trippy.

Yes, I want to know how this works. I've seen it before. I've always been amazed.
BTW, for you Australians and others with an 8-digit phone number, it still works... just put in the first four digits when it says to do the first three.
Wow that is strange

Three hunters decide to get a motel room for the night.
Reservation clerk charges them $30, so each hunter puts in $10.
Later the clerk realizes that for 3 occupants, the room price is $25.
Not knowing how to divide $5 refund evenly among 3 people, he decides to give each hunter $1 and keep $2 for himself.
So now each hunter has actually put in $9, and the clerk kept $2.
$9 x 3 = $27, and plus $2 the clerk kept = $29.
So where is the extra dollar?
not weird or magic but simple algebra-
if you're phone# is xxx-yyyy:
(( 80 * xxx + 1) * 250 + yyyyy + yyyyy - 250) / 2
multiply through:
((20,000 * xxx) + 250 + (2 * yyyy) - 250) / 2
divide each term by 2:
(20,000 * xxx / 2) + (250 / 2) + (2 * yyyy / 2) - (250 / 2)
simplify:
10,000 * xxx + 125 + yyyy - 125
10,000 * xxx + yyyy = xxxyyyy qed
What was supposed to happen? I did it 4 different times and it wasnt anything special...
