Default computer program to keep track of savings and expenses?

does anyone know of a program where i can put in my income and also keep track of my expenses?
i am spending too much at the moment and i dont know where it all goes.

i thought of MYOB but it might be a little too complicated for a computer novice like myself.

Isn't Quicken the standard for that?

I use Microsoft Money to enter my bank account into. I think it's pretty easy. You can sort it out and see how much you spend in each category.

MYOB is shit easy to use! I honestly recommend it above any other program because no matter where you go and who you use as your accountant MYOB is the standard computer program supported by accountants everywhere (in Australia).

Just find an accountant who either specialises in working with cash based owner/operator businesses or has experienced working with such people... who you can pay for an hour's worth of training to help you set it up and use it.

Once you set it up... it's shit easy to use.

It's worth the investment to purchase as well as learn to use. Seriously.

    Otherwise just use excel

MYOB is a good program, but I find, that to get the most out of it, a basic understanding of double entry accounting goes a long way. Quicken is a good, basic cashbook program, but if you are tracking Australian GST, it gets a little complicated and the reporting is a little inflexible.

As an accountant, I usually reccomend QuickBooks, because I find it a lot more user friendly and a bit more forgiving if you need to correct mistakes.

Yet with MYOB it fills out my BAS form for me as such so it makes reporting GST and doing my PAYG every quarter a cinch. I didn't know crap about "double entry accounting" ... I just paid my accountant for an hour of her time to help me set it up and teach me how to use it.

For a cash based business it isn't that hard to use really.

I just import my bank account statements from the internet into MYOB and just clarify the data (as such) thru making notes so then my accountant knows what is a business expense, what is income, and so forth. It generally does and the linking etc for you ... you don't have to know much about accounting to use it. I know I don't! LOL!

Microsoft offers a free one, and will most likely be discontinuing MS Money pretty soon. Check it out!

Quicken and QuickBooks will do all these things too, you just have to set it up

And you are right...you don't have to know about accounting to use any of these packages. The bank account recording functions in all three (MYOB, Quicken and QuickBooks) are pretty easy to get the hang of. It's usually not until you want to do something a little tricky that the accounting knowledge helps.

Download the trial versions and have a play with them to work out which one you like. Most accountants are pretty well versed in all three, so it shouldn't be hard to find someone to help you out with training and support.

BTW: "tricky" does not mean "dodgy"

I vote for Quicken too. I'm using it for personal accounts and for business. QuickBooks is great for business stuff, too.

Quicken works the best for me. Really helps manage your assets well.
