    Default foils, tips, colouring advise?

I have dark brown hair, blue eyes and fair-medium complexion.

I think its time for a change of hair colour. Red is not an option I dont like red hair (on me, on others its cool).

Im thinking of going like a full head of highlights. I want that really natural coloured look and I think if i went llighter as a solid colour it would look really shit.

    my question is:

    - what do i tell the hairdresser to do? is it a full head of foils?
i hate that look where it just looks like thick streaks of colour over the darker colour underneath.

ahh i dunno if im explaining this very well.

does anyone have any pics of this sort of hair colour?

Are you talking about something like this?

You want to keep the all over darkness of your current shade but add some warmth and demension to it with highlights?

full head is going to take a loooot of time... (you can catch up on your trusts reading :-p)

i did it half at a time top layers one day then bottom layers another day.

i think we have similar hair to start... took ages but looked cool. happy days.

I only do a partial highlight. I leave all the hair below my ears alone in order to keep it healthy. The best thing to do is find a couple pics of the hair you want, print them out and bring them in as examples.

what Latina Rose said... no foils beneath your ears. Most colorists don't highlight that area anymore. Your hair in that area wouldn't naturally lighten, on most people, it tends to just naturally be darker, and no one sees it unless you wear an updo all the time. Nowadays, a full vs. partial highlight is refering to the number of foils that are used... in my salon, more than 30 foils is considered a full highlight.

Looks like the model has different highlights- foils of bleach and high lift permanent color... probably some color between the foils.

Latina Rose gives some great advice- bring in a picture or two of what you want. I definately recommend going to a reputable colorist. If possible, get some recomendations and referals or check reviews on Citysearch.com.

Yep, the underneath is all dark brown. I like the hair in the pic you posted, print it out and take it with you. Try to find a few more pics too. There's also a price difference in partial vs. full highlights - my salon charges $85 for partial, $150 for full.
Go somewhere reputable like Mia said, if you have a Toni & Guy I highly recommend them.

^^Ask for a senior colorist, they have the most experience.

I used to get a full head of blonde and copper foils with my natural medium brown hair. It looked really good, I thought. These days I dye it all dark, though, looks more exotic with my Eastern European facial features (my ethnic background is Polish). Also cheaper and much less maintenance.

P.S.- I do my hair at home, but I have a friend who goes here and they're apparently wonderful with cuts, I imagine they'd be skilled colourists also:

Tonik in St Kilda is also brilliant. They're in the same arcade as Safeway. I used to go to Edward Beale for highlights. They're great there, I'm fairly sure there's one on Commercial Rd in Prahran, opposite Pran Central. I went to the one in St Kilda, which unfortunately has now closed.
