Exclamation Autism Awareness, 1 in 150

Autism rates are climbing at a frightening rate, it manifests in 1 in 150 kids now and no one knows why exactly... My bf's son is autistic and he's got some projects cooking for it to raise awareness and improve gov funding, just wanted to share his main one, http://www.myspace.com/horseboymovie. Stop by and drop a line/add if you can please, it helps a lot!

I highly doubt it can be that many classified cases that aren't false.

My partner has Asperger's and since it runs in males of the families, it would be hard to spread from a random 'just weird' person 60 years ago to 1 in 150 today.

Anyway, what % of people are engineers? 'cause there's all yer Autistics... heh, joke.

I wish people would stop blaming the pox shot for this, too... I keep getting that comment and it's been proven false over ten years ago.

Either way.. it's hard to deal with.

And more than just children have it.

Not true, theres alot of info to back that up, you just have to search harder to find it because the drug companies who make the shots have the power in this debate. (Although "pox" shot doesnt really mean anything)

I don't automatically believe that autism rates are rising. Rather, I believe that more people are being DIAGNOSED than in the past, and the rates climb because it's a spectrum disorder. It's just like some people claim that more females are being abused today, when in fact it was always present but more women report it nowadays. My friend's brother has Asberger's but wasn't diagnosed until the late 80s. Before that, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia because Asberger's hadn't been discovered yet. Of course rates are going to climb once you extend the parameters of a diagnosis.

As for vaccines, 1) In the past, they would give a vaccine and wait a couple weeks before giving another. Nowadays, the more the better. 2) Am I the only one who finds it weird that they tell women not to eat some kinds of fish during pregnancy because of mercury, yet they give Thimerosol-based vaccines to babies, who are undergoing an explosion of brain development? However, when they discover the cause of autism, whether it's genetic predisposition, Thimerosol, autoimmune disorder, or a wrench thrown in neural development, I'm not going to be surprised.

As I understand it, the gov funding he's trying to drum up is more for providing additional resources for kids that have it (as he's discovered it's woefully unadressed/funded) rather than pinpointing whether shots or genetics or whatever is to blame.

Adult that have it have almost zilch funding. Why not help ALL autistics? When I went hunting, there were so many resources for kids it wasn't funny. There is ONE therapist for adults in the the entire country.

yes! it's awful. a friend of the family has an autistic son, and when he turns 21 he's basically on his own. he's lucky enough to have a family that can go to court to get lawyers, but it's ridiculous that that even has to be done! adults with autism really have no resources.

Plus it's not like these people really can do anything to help themselves without someone else being there to tell them who's trying to take advantage of them, who's not trying to be nice, who's the right doctor to get him the meds, WHEN to get the meds... they just can't do it and suddenly at 18 or 21 their entire world has changed to where they are responsible and they aren't used to it at ALL!
