    Pole - A Totally New Experience ...

So, I've been away for a while and have missed you guys while mastering segments of my life and furthering my skills in many areas - Just one of them being dancing.

A few weeks ago I got my pole, was very excited, had some trouble putting it up at first, but with a few good suggestions from some very helpful SWers, finally got it up .

I opted for chrome, knowing it would be slippery and therefore more challenging. What I didn't realize was that my knuckles and the pads of my hands were going to be so sore from trying to hold on to it !!!

I don't know if my hands are too small or something, perhaps they just need to get stronger ?

Has this happened to anybody else on a chrome pole?

The first time I used a chrome pole I felt like I had never touched one!!! Slid right down the damn thing! I think it happens alot!!

It does take a while for the muscles in your metacarpals to strenghten...that is why your knuckles are sore...Sassy is right, flexing them regularily helps.

The palms are sore until you get your calluses back! Also keep in mind chrome heats up with continual use, so it actually building the calluses faster.

It has nothing to do with the size of your hands, it has to do with skin conditioning and grip/hand strength.

One exercise I give my students to strenghten their grips is to get stress balls...those soft rubber ones, and squeeze them in your hands...first in the palm, and second with the fingertips....alternate.

Another suggestion for girls who do stage shows...anytime you use a flat hand (crawl, push up, cat roll) use your fingertips.

Thanks SassySummer & Natalie FRP .

Sorry it's been so long; I have been so very blissfully busy lately .

Alena, I thought it was just me. However, I have definitely been strengthening up all around.

BTW, the stress balls were an excellent suggestion ::thanks Alena:: .

yea, i second alenas suggestion on the stress balls.

another tip i give my students is if they don't have a ball, get a towel or shirt and twist it. just keep twisting and releasing, back and forth...it ends up being about the same width as a pole and is actually a great forearm exercise.

Oh yeah I had no grip until I built some calluses. Even now, if I go to take a random swing around the pole I just fly right off. I have to warm up both my body and the pole to each other before its safe.

I agree with everyone. And you're the one who wanted a more challenging pole, lol. You will get it, it just takes more time and then you won't even notice the difference anymore.

(If you want to cheat, you can go get a water soluble spray adhesive or hair spray and lightly spray the pole, but you didn't hear it from me. )
