    The Bad Kind of Grinding

I just had a surprise root canal. The dentist pointed out several other problem areas, and my teeth are cracking. I've had shooting pains all through my lower jaw (both sides) for over a week. Evidently it's because I'm clenching and grinding my teeth. I haven't noticed myself doing this, so he says I'm probably doing it in my sleep.

I've never had a problem with this before, but I'm under quite a bit of stress at the moment. I couldn't afford to buy a mouth-guard, but I need to stop this. What do I do?

I've had the same problem, ever since I was a kid.

if you're worried about the price, some mouth guards aren't even that expensive. Unfortunately that's the only advice I can offer because I haven't come up with a solution either besides that.

I grind my teeth super bad... when I didnt have money for a mouth guard my dentist recommended getting just one of those cheap hockey mouth guards. He said it will work almost as well until I can get the money to get one made.

I never did get it though lol... im lazy..

^Do you have to get them custom made? Hmm I never knew that. I guess that's why they're expensive.

Oooh thank you so much for this thread/link! I have been a teeth grinder my entire life. In the past year, I've noticed that my back teeth are literally being grinded away..

I want to buy one of these mouth guards ASAP!

You need to get the orthodontic ones custom made... they take a mould of your teeth and make it to fit perfectly...

A cheaper solution.. though not as good is the ones for sports that you put in boiling water and then in your mouth and they kinda mould to your teeth..

Is there anything I can do with what I already have? I'm seriously flat-out right now. I can't afford to buy anything.

I bought a mouthguard at K-Mart ($1.99 a piece)- "TruFit Strapless Elvax protection pads...."

(they're in the Sports Gear section......you put them in hot water on the stove to custom-mold them to your teeth.)

Until then, clamp down on a large chunk of pariffin wax- make it too big to choke on in your sleep.

I bought one at Rite-Aid (or Fred Meyers - a Portland drug store) but I haven't done the whole boiling, form fitting thing yet. I need to, I woke up last night with bad pain. My dentist always tells me I have the kind of wear on my teeth of a 50 year old from all my grinding.

Oh ya, the gaurd was under $10. The one from the dentist is a few hundred, but you can afford one from the drugstore.
