Default Ren Faire Addicts - SCA?

Don't think I'm going to get many responses on this, but I'll ask anyway.

Does anyone belong to the SCA?? (Society for Creative Anachronism)

There is a somewhat local chapter here (Shire of The Rusted Woods) and I would like to join.

My thinking is that it would make my Ren Fair experiences that much more special.

But it seems really involved so I was looking for someone else with some experience.

    Thanks.

Not a member of SCA, but my ex and I and the kids (or some configuration of same) have traveled to the Bristol, Wis. Renn Faire around 15 times over the past 19 years. No, I don't dress up.

We go to the Maryland Ren Faire every year. It's worlds better than the PA one.The wife and kids dress up, but so far I have not. I told her if she makes me a Dread Pirate Roberts outfit, complete with the sweet little leather mask I'll think about it. The SCA has always seemed a bit out there to me. I have friends who are involved, but mostly it seems like an excuse to go drinking in the woods in silly outfits. Plus, a lot of those people take themselves entirely too seriously.

See, now those were my concerns. They seem a little "off". Like, the medieval version of Trekkies or D&D geeks (no offense to anyone).

We go to the big one in upstate NY every year and yes, both Brad and I dress up. I've just gotten some new finery and frippery, so I'll wind up posting pics one of these fine days.

Hehe. I was thinking of joining SCA because I'm really into costuming and sewing, but this was my concern too. I don't want to be involved with people who take that stuff waaaaay too seriously.

I think I'll stick to costume parties and Halloween.

We always hit up the Ohio RF. Really helps since it is 20-30 min from where we live, so we can go quite a few times every year.

My fiancee bought me a puzzle ring for me to have an engagement ring and got herself a matching one.

We are currently trying to save up money so we can get ourselves some really good costumes to dress up in every time we go. I'll have to check the SCA out.
Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.
Guy #2: Dude, I'd hit that so hard whoever could pull me out would become the King of England.

My grandfather gave my grandmother a puzzle ring (undone) as an engagement ring. He said "I want a smart woman and I think you're her... put this together and lets get hitched." Oddly romanic I guess. Anyway

This past year i got roofied at RF by one of the workers... nothing happened but I dont think I want to go next year and I dont think I'll ever drink mead again... I used to think it would be way fun to be part of tho. I'm interested in the responses you get tho!!

Wow, that's scary...sorry to hear that. I go with my quite large fiance so nobody wants to roof me to have someone else reap the benefits of me being out of it, lol!

And I LOVE Mead. I only drink it at the Faire, so it's a real treat that happens only a few weekends a year. But, try to get out of all of those clothes when tipsy!

well I was with three big guys and about 4 more people but they were about 10 ft away while I was doing some ax throwing and ths guy slipped it in (or so we think) he grabbed me and kissed me then gave me a free drink coin and told me to come back in 20 min. I dont think he realized I was with the guys I was with... but yeah shitty situation, I still have bill collector calling me about the hospital bill. I had to be hospitalized, it was not cool.

My friend used to make his own mead... it was tasty!! And yeah I am almost fully out of those clothes by the time I'm in the car.

^At the Maryland one they have this concoction that is Mead mixed with raspberry wine and it is amazingly delicious. It's also quite lethal.

Also, Dylan, most of the folks I know into the SCA are also into D&D, Sci-Fi, RHPS, etc, so yeah your initial assessment is correct.

Nah it has a fruitier name..."Serendipity" or something like that. It probably has a different name at each faire. Have you been to the Maryland one in Crownesville?

I go to a MD one and a VA one and I dont ever drive there or really pay too much attention (I'm kind of a space cadet sometimes...) but yeah I've had Serendipity, so maybe that is what it is. ::sees something shiney and runs off::

I went to Pennsic for two years with my ex (who wasn't my ex at the time obviously)...his parents had been SCA members for 20-some years and had taken him and his brother every year since they were born, lol.

Anyway, it was SO MUCH FUN! Medieval roleplaying at its finest! But I wasn't interested in doing any of their other local events throughout the year...just Pennsic. Apparently there are a lot of people who do the same thing--they're SCA members, but Pennsic is the only event they attend with any regularity.

My character was a Venitian courtesan, and I discovered that I'm quite good at archery...and BS'ing my way through various early European dance forms. My ex and I crashed the Ball without any training or knowledge of any of the dances (they offer classes and workshops there to learn, but we thought it'd be more fun to just go to the Ball and wing it. And it was!

So yeah...I recommend you join the SCA just so you can experience Pennsic.

I hope DateRapeSerf gets beheaded for pulling this shit at Ren Fairs.

I worked with a couple great people who were big into Ren Fair, it's mostly just creative people who want to eat, drink & be merry. Most casual Ren Fair goers wear "peasant" garb because it's affordable...The elaborate costumes can cost thousands of dollars to make & maintain. (PS Ask someone about the "Greensleeves" costumes for women...tee hee..)

Maybe I'll go to a RenFair....but my race didn't exist at that time in history LOL I know, it's all about fun.

OK, I checked out the Pennsic website and have decided that a lot of this is definitely not for me.

I love this period in history and read books and study it all I can. Next to SW, researching medieval history is what I do on the internet.

But, noooo, and while I thank you for pointing me to that website, those type of people really scare me.

I'll just keep on eating, drinking and being merry and practicing my juggling sticks.

And MM is right...I spend thousands on my costumes. Way more than I ever spent on my stripper wardrobe and I wear them a lot less.

Learn to speak olde English and go to impress the actors. (Many of them play this game too.)

Personally I wouldnt go back again except for flirting with the busty wenches.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

I've got that pretty much covered...been doing this for well over a decade. I was just looking to further the experience, if possible.

I found out my local RF has a "Friends of the Faire" where you can volunteer without having to be performer. That might be the way to go.

I used to be a member of the SCA, but my particular quirk is Ancient Roman history, and there aren't many other Rome nuts in the SCA. One guy told me "If you're into Rome, you're pretty screwed around here."

So I ended up starting my own reenactment group for 1st c. Rome. I'm a history dork, what can I say?

Yup ... Stirling ! I hit it several times every summer, and a couple of friends are 'exhibitors'. I also made my own 'wench' costume (because I couldn't ever get any of the rental costumes to lace up in the front LOL).

We must keep missing each other then, because I'd remember seeing you Mel!!

I'll be there most weekends this year as a Friend of the Faire so maybe we'll get to meet up!

You'll just have to excuse my Brad though...he's a boob man and he'll probably be speechless for a few minutes!

I am going to go to the one here in CO this summer too. If I wasnt preggers Id work there this summer as well.

I love Renn Faires, my dad performs at them all up and down the west coast. I've never gotten into SCA though. If I could fun all the attire & had time, I probably would... then again, I'd do a lot of cosplay in general if I could.
