    Thumbs down Henna

I've been doing searches on here about people who've dyed their hair with Henna, but I'm not seeing anything. I did mine (waste of freaking time because it turned out to be the exact same as my natural red) and now whenever it's wet or even just a little humid it smells like dirty wet dog. It grosses me out!! I sprayed it with perfume hoping it would help but it didnt. Anyone else have this problem? what did you do about it?

all I know is that you shouldn't use chemical dyes over henna because it can cause severe breakage.

Yeah I know it is, it's just as bad as anything else you use to changer hair color. Which I dont think many people know they're all "oooo aaahhhh 100% natural wow, must be good for your hair!" uhm nooo. Anyway yeah I want my hair to not smell like doggies.

You mean like I should dye my hair now after having dyed it? I dont plan on it, but I'm not sure I was reading what you said correctly...

noooooooooo no no! You should NOT dye over it with regular chemical dye. Not saying that you were going to...just that's all I know about henna. *shrug* Sorry about the stinky wet dog smell...that sucks! Maybe keep a travel bottle of yummy smelling spray conditioner in your purse?

you should shampoo like 15 times. I used to use henna, and the smell always went away after a week or so, but i think it went away because of shamooing. Use some "clarifying" shampoo - it cleans the best

LSM is right, do NOT color over it with regular dye.

also, try calling LUSH ...they have henna dyes and lots of other cool things, they may know how to fix it.

Lush sells a couple different types of henna in different shades:

And a thread from their forum on it:

Personally I'm against coloring your hair at home. Going to the salon yields better results and healthier hair. On the off chance that you are unhappy, they'll fix it for free.

maybe it depends on the brand?? I've heard those things about henna before as well.. but I've been doing my hair with it for 2 years, as well as sometimes using chemical hair colour from the store.. and I even permed my hair abotu 5 months ago and have both hennaed and chemicalled on top of that. For ME the henna definitely makes my hair stronger and repairs damage. You can see a huge difference in the hair that had henna on it vs. not (the virgin hair uptop) and how the perm affected (damaged) the virgin hair and not the henna hair. Right now I'm using it to repair the perm damage. But yeah, it makes my head smell like grass (better than wet dog but I wish it just smelled like me).

Thanks Rose, I have a friend who is a stylist and if I want I can always go to her or she'll come over but I get these hairs up my ass at about 2/3 am and I cut my own hair or color it. I've been coloring my hair since I was like 15 and always at home, now that I think about it I havent ever had it professionally colored, but I've never had results I'm not happy with, and I have honestly been more satisfied with my dye jobs than the ones I see some of my friends get when they go to salons.

I'm not unhappy with the henna results it's just that I chose a bad shade. I dyed it red hoping to make my naturally red hair redder, it didnt do anything but cover my grey, which, honestly I really liked. I have a genetic predisposition to going grey, I dont believe it's from dying, stress maybe but not dying. I just wish it didnt smell like doggies when it's wet/damp/thinks water might be nearby...

You can color over body art quality henna. Other hennas often have additives that can react badly with commercial color.
