Default How much should you tell your doctor?

Ok, so I was wondering, if a person were to inform their doctor that they use certain illegal substances, is the doctor allowed at all to get that person in trouble? Legally, what you tell your doctor, can it be used at all against you?

    Just curious.

No, medical records are sealed I am fairly sure.
If they ask you you can always lie, but I would assume it is far better to tell the truth.

I've always wondered this as well. When I was 16 and 17 and going to Planned Parenthood, I even denied smoking cigarettes and drinking because i was scared they'd tell someone...I'm not sure who, but I was scared! But even now, I'm reluctant to release that kind of information.
The only time I did was to a therapist I saw. I told her I did coke, and since I 'recreationally preferred uppers' she prescribed me Wellbutrin instead of Xanax or something.. what a smart lady ..
But I am curious to know if they can say anything to anyone, bc it seems smart to give a full-description of your body and what you put into it.

No whatever u tell your doctor is confidential. The only reason a doctor can break that confidentiality is if your medical records got court ordered during a trial.

Also for minors, doctors can reveal certain things to their parents.

I can only speak for US laws, so if you live elsewhere, you'll have to look up the regulations.

In regards to illegal substances and underage drinking, there are no reporting laws and doctors really don't care what you do in the privacy of your own home as long you are not getting high/drunk and then driving. Doctors do need to know, however, all substances ingested, including drugs, alcohol, herbal supplements, etc...because there can be fatal interactions with prescribed medications.

As for minors, if the subject is sexual in nature (pregnancy, STDs) doctors cannot reveal this information to parents/guardians without the minor's consent. Everything else is fair game.

Do minors still have to tell their parents if they get an abortion? Cuz when I got mine I was 17 and I couldn't do it without my parents there.

It depends on the state. I had one at 16 and didnt need parental consent.

Yes, it's always important to tell your doctor everything.

Tell them everything. If you don't they can't effectively treat you.

yes, tell them everything. take it from me, you dont want meds that whatever your/who your talking about is doing, would mess the meds up.

Your doctor is one person who's questions you should always answer as honestly as possible. They're interested in only giving you the best care as possible. If you feel uncomfortable talking to your doc about certain things (ex--you feel like your doc is judging you), perhaps you should change doctors.

If you have ever been arrested for alcohol or substance abuse or things of that matter, or are on probation for these things, I believe they will give that info.

    Nope, they can't do that.

It's doctor/patient privileged information just like the lawyer/client relationship. Don't be shy, I've told docs everything I do, including using illegal substances. Never once have I received a lecture or been made to feel bad about it.

Hmmm... thanks for the input. I was just worried about legal safety. I don't really care what the doctor thinks of me.

They only time they break doctor patient confidentiality is in the case of you being an immediate danger to yourself (suicidal) or others (murder).

Yes they can. If you have been in trouble with the law ie: probation or such(which may not your case anyways) , you sign papers giving permission to give any info on your past or future history including psych and other medical records. It is not priveledged(sp) info once you have been in trouble, they will have access to it.

This is not the same as the doctors voluntarily calling up the police after you walk out the door to report you for drug use. That permission is for the police, your probation officer, or whoever to demand your records from the doctor. Even then, they can only ask for whatever is relevant to your case.

    You gave them permission.

It's not priveledged information if you give them permission to look at it.

Ok, whatever, you know exactly what I mean. I am referring to a specific situation, plus I said, it's probably not her case, however it is one in which you would not wanna go tell a dr. what you have been doing.

In the US, the Doctor can tell another Doctor ANY medical info. the other attending Doctor may need to treat you properly. The Government ALWAYS has access to our medical records. Other than that we have HIPPA. So you will be protected to an 'extent' with that law.

PS the law gets involved ONLY is you state you are going to hurt yourself or another. If you say you smoke pot or do crack, doctors don't do shit about that with the law.
