Default when is it REALLY time to toss your makeup?

most of my makeup is in a powder form, including foundation, blush, and eyeshadow. i know that it's good practice to toss your mascara after 3 months and lipstick after one year. but what about eyeliner and eyeshadow?

for eyeliner i could simply keep sharpening the pencil before every use so bacteria can't contaminate the liner before i apply it.

i've read conflicting opinions on powder makeup, ranging from throwing it out after two years to keeping it forever, as powders supposedly stay contaminant-free.

i admit to owning a jane eye zing eyeshadow that i purchased in 2000 and use it to this day.
i have an urbay decay eyeshadow in mildew that i love yet only wear on certain occasions. i purchased it in 2005.

    so what's the verdict?

I read powders last five years, lipstick one...mascara goes bad very fast (whatever happened to cake mascara? Just wondering) and anthing that smells funky or gets broken...Might as well toss away.

I think as long as you wash and disinfect your brushes regularly, there isn't really an experation date on eyeshadows. (Unless of course, you've had some kind of infection or eye problem.)

^Exactly. A good rule of thumb is to toss it when it looks or smells funny. Eyeshadows last for years!

If I were sane, I'd tell you to toss it as soon as I'm done with it.

    Trick I knoooow.

If you feel your broken eyeshadow is just too good to throw away it can be rescued! If it's not too old you can put rubbing alcohol in the eyshadow and make it a paste. Leave it out to dry (but in it's container to take that shape) and it'll be JUST like new!

I keep my black mascara after it's useless for my lashes. Why? Cause when its aaaaaalmost dried out, it's great on my brows (since I have black hair).

Great tip! You can use this method on any powder (e/s, bronzer, etc). Search for complete instructions on specktra.net.

Old foundation and mascara I toss. Everything else I keep around. I have a lipstick from high school that's good as new, despite being 5 years old. I wore it today!

oh. i read in shape magazine today that powders should be tossed out after a year but they didn't say why. i thought you could kill bacteria with rubbing alcohol. my eyeshadow from 2000 still looks good and smells okay and i haven't had any problems with it when i wear it.

why the so-soon expiration claims? i guess it's like chewing gum where the companies want us to buy more product sooner.

^^You've got it right, cosmetics companies want us to keep re-purchasing! I've had shadows for over three years and they are fine.

I never read the rule about tossing lipsticks after a year. Does the bacteria collect that quickly? I have a lipgloss that I bought about 1 1/2 ago. I used a couple of times, then forgot about it. I rediscovered again and nothing has happened to my lips. They haven't fallen off, no diseases or growths....should I really toss it?
