Default Whats a good digital camera?

I spent $800 on a Sony Cybershot DSC-W1 just over 3 years ago and its broken already - just weeks after the warrantee ran out.

I liked the camera, I had no problems with it until it broke. A more update version is now in the shops for about $170.00. Im half inclined to get this or another Sony because I have a whole bunch of Sony memory sticks which will be wasted otherwise...

On the other hand Im sort of pissed that my first digital camera is broken already since it cost so much especially, and I noticed someone on livejournal slagging off Sony Cameras the other day so I wondered if their cameras are known to be shit? If so, what would be a better brand to buy?

I just got an awesome new one last week!
It's a canon Digital IXUS 75. It's so cool. Its got a massive LCD screen on the back, it's 7.5 megapixels and pretty easy to use. It has this facial recognition thing for focusing on people's faces.

I went to Ted's Camera House and got the camera, plus a 1 gig memory card, plus a leather case, plus a 3 year extended warranty for $560.

I don't currently own a digital camera (I know, I'm primitive) but whenever I'm about to buy something, I spend a lot of time reading reviews of people who sound like they know what they're talking about (more than I do at least ). I just found these sites that might help, look for the comments.

    http://www.dpreview.com/ http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs.asp

    http://www.dcviews.com/ http://www.dcviews.com/cameras.htm

    http://www.imaging-resource.com/DIGCAM01.HTM

Also, Amazon and other sites have some user comments that are often helpful, but not always accurate.

My god! Why pay that much... just go on eBay people!!

I've bought plenty of good "second hand" digital cameras because the person had up-graded thus the camera that they are selling they don't need nor use anymore... and never paid over $100 for one!!

I'm a Kodak person myself. I have two currently.

EasyShare CX4230 which I can only use for pictures (kinda my back up camera)

EasyShare C340 which I am planning to use more when I acquire a bigger memory stick for it as it takes great pictures yet has movie mode on it as well.

Both are really easy to use and cheap and produce good photos (if you aren't being a professional photographer).

I spent so much because I wanted a decent camera. It was 3 years ago and alot of the cameras around at the time were shitty and digital cameras were more expensive period. Also it was the time when 5mp cameras were still new here. Most others were still 3 or 4 mp.

Also - I was earning good money at the time, that was just a nights earnings or less.

I dont really want to get a camera through ebay or online, I want to go into a shop and buy it so i know exactly what Im getting and what the cameras history is.

I want a few features too. Movie mode is a must. I want at least 5mp and optical zoom and other things i can maybe play around with.

The prices have dropped quite substantially from 3 years ago for a decent camera which is great news.

I would seriously recommend the one that I got. A feature that I also like is that it takes consecutive pics very quickly. I use it for pole dancing comps etc so thats important to me coz my last camera took too long between shots and I would miss all the tricks.

I think the best brands for cameras are canon and nixon.

The best thing to do - as I did is go into the store and they will show u how the camera works (they put batteries in) and let u take some pics in there. They let me do this in Teds camera house. There's no point just reading on teh box what it does.

The point-and-shoot cameras in the PC World test, according to the listed prices, go for $150-270 US. The top-rated camera was $149.

Yeah thats why I want to go into a shop. I cant judge solely by looking online, I need to see and feel how something works. Occasionally gadgets have really annoying features which you dont know about until you find out for yourself, lol!
Im really likeing the sound of your camera - I am extrememly impatient and like things to work fast. I shall definatly check it out.

I guess if i dont get a Sony i can give my mum allof my memory sticks as she has the same camera. It just annoys me though, lol!

I hope the prices are going to be comparable over here.
Digital camera prices definatly have dropped though so im going to feel optomistic about the whole thing until i find out otherwise

Well, just that I havn't gone wrong with buying digital cameras off eBay.

Then again I refuse to purchase from people who are less than 99% feedback with anything that costs over $100 for me to purchase (including shipping).

Just that I have Kodak and it works for me.

I got a Canon XTi Rebel SLR, after reading X Evan X' suggestion to get it, as it is supposedly considered the cheapest professional grade camera.

All I have done is taken a few pictures to post here, so far, but the images are huge and clear, I had to size them way down to get them to fit.

The cool thing is that you can get all kinds of serious lenses for it.

Anybody want to trade a Canon XTi Rebel SLR for a 3 month old Compaq HP Presario 6000 with 21 months left on the warranty?

Not just the Canon. In the past year, Nikon has come out with the D50 and, I think, the D40 that are SLRs and can switch lenses out, too. Good entry-level cameras for people who want the SLR experience.

One of the best pieces of advice I've received on digital cameras is, only buy cameras from companies that made cameras before the digital camera revolution.

Its done me very well so far.

Also, www.newegg.com is a great place to buy the camera once you've found what you like, plus it has great customer reviews. They had a great sale on when I bought mine and got a great deal.

    I use a Canon SD 500

I have a Casio Exilim 6mp. I paid $280 for it and it's really cute. Black, very slim and sleek. I love it b/c it doesn't take up a lot of room in my purse.
