    Breakfast at McDonald's

I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently completed my college degree.
The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with.

Her last project of the term was called, "Smile." The class was asked to g o out and smile at three people and document their reactions.

I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say
hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally.

Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest
son, and I went out to McDonald's one crisp March morning.
It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son.
We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a
sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my
    husband did.

I did not move an inch... an overwhelming feeling of panic
welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved.
As I turned around I smelled a horrible "dirty body" smell, and
there standing behind me were two! poor homeless men.

As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was
"smiling". His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he
searched for acceptance. He said, "Good day" as he counted the few coins he had been clutching. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his
friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation.

I held my tears as I stood there with them.

The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted.

He said, "Coffee is all Miss" because that was all they could
afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up,
they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm).

Then I really felt it - the compulsion was so great I almost
reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes.
That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on
    me, judging my every action.

I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me
two more breakfast meals on a separate tray.
I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had
chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid
my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand.

He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Thank you."
I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, "I did not do
this for you. God is here working through me to give you hope."
I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son.

When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, "That is why
God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope." We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the Grace that we had been given were we able to
give. ; We are not church goers, but we are believers.

That day showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love.

I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this
story in hand. I turned in "my project" and the instructor read it.
Then she looked up at me and said, "Can I share this?"
I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class.
She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human
beings and being part of God share this need to heal people and
    to be healed.

In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's, my
husband, son, instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom
on the last night I spent as a college student.

I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn:
    UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE.
Much love and compassion is sent to each and every person who
may read this and learn how to LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.

There is an Angel sent to watch over you.

An Angel wrote: Many people will walk in and out of your life,
but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.

To handle yourself, use your head.
To handle others, use your heart.
God Gives every bird it's food, but He does not throw it into its nest.

With a secret inside that has never been told
This box is priceless but as I see
The treasure inside is precious to me

Today I share this treasure with thee It's the treasure of friendship you've given me

Now THAT'S what Christianity is about! Not protesting at VT funerals, ragging on "fags", etc.

Sweet story. We should all go do something nice for someone today.

Aww that almost made me cry, how kind of you. I honestly do think I'd do the same thing if I were in that situation. Hopefully an opportunity arises so i can do something kindhearted for a stranger.

I always smile at the drive-thru and ask how he/she is doing. It's always unexpected and catches them off guard. They always smile thouugh and that makes my day. Sometimes I wait and say "Excuse me, I think you forgot something" and when they ask "what?", I tell them "You forgot my free smile!" They always laugh at that one!

it's sweet, but it doesn't say anything about christianity in it

funny how we make assumptions based on our own perceptions of faith

    interesting to me, i guess

If I was feeling particularly spiritual I might, although I make a point of personally not doing that. I'm not a church go-er or a mosque go-er.

I'm Muslim, but my family is Christian.

I just dissect these things b/c I have two perspectives I guess.

Hah, yeah, I was thinking that too. Cute story, but... kind of annoying at the same time.

Giving money to homeless people generally only helps to keep them homeless.

Call me cruel, but I think giving money to a homeless person is not a good thing to do.

When I say this, I don't mean to sound mean...I give to charities...having said that...I know I'll get some flames.

I can't believe you said that!!!

    *throws flames at Mr. Hyde*

Just kidding. I agree with you to a certain point. Begging on the street turns me off, because I think it usually goes for alcohol.

But if they're actually in an eatery, then I would most definitely foot the bill for something to eat.

I saw a guy standing on the corner in Vegas with a sign that said
" Not gonna lie, need a beer"

Now..I HATE homeless people. But this guy was honest! He wasn't beggin for money for food that he would blow on alcohol. So my Bf and I stopped at a store, bought a can of beer, and gave it to him. Just for the honesty.

I notice in Vegas, the homeless standing on the corner with a sign that says please feed me...they are always shaved, clean looking shoes, yeah, they are a little gruffy looking, but clean looking.....

But yeah...it was a cute story.

I don't know, those stories usually get on my nerves only cause I doubt they're even for real and also for the statement Jenny made - why can't someone do a good dead without forcing a religious slant onto it? I've bought meals for homeless people plenty of times, but it is presumptuous and self-righteous to start with the God talk. Just my opinion.

Some people just like to interject God into those kinds of situations. Which is fine with me. Whatever good deed they did whether it was influenced by God... I just thinks its good that that person was able to help the homeless man. I mean the homeless man couldnt jump behind the counter and start working for the food he needed to have right then and there. So a little help along the way sometimes is just what people need. In this case a meal when youre hungry.

I do agree with Mr Hyde on some level. Giving them change all the time wont eliminate their homelessness. It will only let them live one more day. To really help they need education, a warm place to sleep and a job. Of course thats the simple solution. Im sure its much more complicated than that.

For a while, I had a project going where, on my days off, I would go downtown and when the homeless guys asked me for money, I would tell them "I'll give you a cup of bottomless coffee and as many cigarettes as you care to smoke for as long as you're willing to sit across from me and tell me stories." (This was before the smoking ban...) A lot of the street punks (younger homeless crowd, rather impressive sub-culture, actually) took me up on it. I brought a tape recorder and a notebook.
I'm sure a lot of the stories were complete fabrication, but it turns out they're real people. Crazy, huh?
Of course, I had some standards- relatively sober, no obvious mental instability, basically the ability to carry on a coherent conversation. I learned SO much about a segment of society that most people like to pretend doesn't exist. Sadly, that project came to an end when I started school, I just didn't have the time.
That being said, I still berate the drunk dudes when they hassle me. they get one firm "no", and then it's ON....

    ide is precious to me
what Jenny said and, I also have a hard time believing that is acceptable homework, since it had nothing to do with the original assignment.

Why is this story preceded by all that SMILING talk? Had nothing to do with what happened.

Clogging family and homeless arteries alike, this is clearly a MCDONALD'S AD! (omg! just figured out the smiling part!) damn this shit is SCARY.

Now I feel compelled and OBLIGED to tell MY cool homeless story: I was sorting thru change in the change thing on my car door, noticed I had a 50-cent piece in there for quite some time. Then a homeless guy at a gas station asked me for 50 cents. AND I GOT TO MAKE COMPLETE AND TOTAL USE OUT OF IT!!! It was sooooo perfect. And I didn not smile.

I just can't believe how she thinks she's god's gift to the world because she gave a homeless man some food.

Shit, I wonder what I am when I give them clothes. A Saint?
