Default hair dresser said he cant do this BOO

I went to my hairdresser today and asked him to do blonde tips to make it look like in the pic. He said it will be too hard coz my hair is soooo dark right now.

    BOO!!

So Im gonna attach the pic of what I want my hair to look like and what it looks like and if anyone disagrees and thinks it can be done please tell me and I will go see a diff hairdresser.

He also suggested that I wash my hair with morning fresh (dishwashing detergent) for a week to get some of the dark colour out (its a semi-permanent) and then come in and he can do some tips but they wont be as light as what i want.

Wash your hair with dishwashing detergent? Why would a professional give that kind of advice.... permanent haircolor cannot just be "washed off", not to mention detergent is very harsh. Better left for the dishes.

hmm, I'm sure it can be done.. maybe he's wary to be doing any coloring because of your hair's condition.. are the ends damaged from other coloring/styling?

No my hair is very soft and shiny. Its actually a very oily type of hair not dry at all. He said it will be hard to achieve the look I want coz its so dark (a level 3 brown I think he said which is very close to black). Im sick of it being so dark and I dont see why i cant change it I see celebs going from dark brown to blonde back to brown all the time!

Maybe the guy is lazy. I'm certain it can be done. If your hair is very dark, he'll need to bleach it, then maybe tint or dye it to the desired shade, but it can be done. Go to a different stylist in another salon for a consult, I'm no stylist, and can't see your hair, so seeing a professional is best! Good luck!!

It IS a good idea to wash with BAKING SODA before coloring, but I only do that for home colorings to clear out any residue.

she said it's semi permanent. but i wouldnt wash my hair with dish detergent anyway!

but seriously.. it cant be just done like that. it would take more than one time, which would damage your hair. it's really hard to get your hair from that dark to blonde, even if it isnt your whole head. it can turn orange or look brassy. and while it can be DONE, it can't be done in one sitting. at least i dont think so.. i've been told the same thing before, and i've seen results when i've tried doing it. i know i obviously cant do it like my hair lady can, but she told me the exact same thing, and explained to me that that was why it doesnt work.

ok I really dont want it to turn orange, copper, brassy coz thats just ugly.

So what u r saying is that it would have to be gradual? I am ok with that as long as Im not stuck with this dark hair forever. I like it but I need a change. I dont mind doing it gradually if I will get a better result in the end.

yup i had to do mine gradually (even though im back to dark). its hard to go from really dark to light! but you can definately do it over time, just make sure to take really good care of your hair because all that work can damage it.

It can be done, though it will take skill...you'll just have to find someone who isn't too chickenshit to take your hair lighter.

my hair was more like a dark 4 (and nearly violet black) and they were prepared to do it... slowly.

we just started doing foiling and worked our way through. i'm still partially through the process. will be a while before i have 'holly hair' like your pic

he's a fool to turn away that kind of money and repeat business.

dish washing detergent is even too harsh to use to wash your Car....pleeeeaaase don't do that to your hair! and i would be reluctant to trust any stylist who would even suggest that...

My hair is one shade above black. You can see how light I've gone, but I did it gradually. I say go somewhere else for a consultation and see what they say. Tell them what the other colorist said about the detergent too, I bet they will say it's not a good idea. The first time I had my hair lightened I was able to get pretty light tho, so I don't see why they wouldn't be able to do it to your hair, esp if it is healthy. Maybe the semi-permanent color?? But that shouldn't take too long to disappear anyway.

Maybe he knew he didn't have the skill to do it and didn't want to say that.

You know what, take that as a blessing. At least he was HONEST and told you he coudln't do it instead of effing up your hair ya know! Find a colorist in your area. That is their specialty.

Yep, a lot of hairdressers would have just done it and fucked your hair up. It takes an experienced colorist to do what you are asking, if they can even do it at all.

Im so obsessed with hair colour right now.

There is this Australian celebrity called Natalie Bassingthwaighte and she has gone from blonde to brunette (quite dark) and back again at least 4 times in the last 2 years.

    http://nataliebassingthwaighte.com/

I am gonna do it but I will be patient. At least coz of dancing I can afford to keep getting it done.

Britt pretty much hit the nail on the head... It can be done but I would never promise that desired result in one sitting. My hair is natually DARK and I'm planning on going light again... usually by the third highlight, I can reach my goal. I would be very wary of any stylist that says he or she can get you there in one visit, they're either BSing you or willing to greatly compromise the health of your hair. And dishwashing detergent can make the hair very brittle, not exactly the best condition for highlighting... you are lucky he turned you away.

Use a deep penetrating protein treatment 3x a week before and after your highlights. Use Redken CAT in the shower before you condition, and Anti Snap after your towel dry your hair. Ask your stylist if he or she pulls the bleach from scalp to ends during retouch applications-you don't want that. Try to find someone that only applys the bleach only where it's needed or those repeated overlappings of bleach will cause some serious frizz and/or breaking.
