    Default Custom reptile enclosure

I want to build a custom reptile enclosure for bearded dragons. Has anyone made their own enclosure and if so do u have ideas, photos, measurements, building materials? Any ideas or advise would be great.

I have used a store bought one in the past but I like my animals to have the best of everything and I would rather an enclosure that is larger and has more room for climbing.

I used to be a member of a bearded dragon forum years ago and people used to post pics of enclosures they had built but I recently went back to a similar forum and had trouble navigating it and there didnt seem to be any sort of pics I was looking for.

I know in the US many people build huge custom enclosures for iguanas - that is the stuff Im interested in.

Also if anyone in Melbourne makes or knows a person who makes such enclosures I might be interested in buying one!

    Cheers

glasscages.com custom builds but they're US-based but their website can offer info on dimensions and sizings.

a lot of people custom-build their own aquarium tanks in my other hobby and some of them also do reptiles/paludariums/etc. (significant dendro/dart frog population for some reason )

i would check glass shops and aquarium sites for more info. most of the custom builders also supplement their business with reptile and such enclosures. they're essentially the same thing but with thinner glass. hth

Send a PM to Snakebabe. She can answer any question you have. She has a few lizards, and I believe they have made all their enclosures.

    Oh cool xoxo

Well Im getting some green tree frogs from the lost frogs home - they are responsible mainly for rescuing banana box frogs (ie frogs that are accidentally transported from NSW and QLD to melbourne in fruit crates usually banana crates) to victoria. Victoria is far too cold for green tree frogs to survive so they rescue the frogs - often from coles and other supermarkets and they are sent to the centre to be quarantined and then sold as pets as they cannot release them back into the wild. So I will get my frogs from them.

Thanks GCG reptapets look really good. Their old website was reptahouse and the link wasnt working so thanks heaps for finding that coz I remembered them from last time I was looking for cages.

    Check out www.kingsnake.com

Scroll down a bit, and there's a big section with links to cage builders. Quite a helpful site, though I don't know who if anyone deals with Australia.

I have built custom enclosures before, but never for a beardie. It really all depends on the sizing you want, and what type of materials you want to use. A good friend of mine keeps Beardies but he has his in a 125 gallon aquarium. It's pretty huge though, and his 3 seem to do fine in there.

What is the upkeep etc of a green tree frog? Can they pretty much look after themselves if you provide them the 'right' environment in thier tank ? I'm still researching other alternative pets I can have in my next unit (I'm not ready right now to have another animal) that are 'tank' orientated as such.

ETA: I went to the "everything reptile" site and it seems the commercial sale of frogs in Queensland is currently not permitted.

So... No frogs for me then... Turtles and Lizards are okay supposedly.

Anyone with any information on the care of Turtles and Lizards ?

I would highly doubt green tree frogs are tank oriented. They're very sensitive creatures.

A good 'tank' creature would be a hermit crab, small lizards with proper care, and perhaps a tiny snake.

GCG green tree frogs dont need a lot of upkeep but their water quality must be very very good as it will directly affect their health if not.

Remember green tree frogs are long living frogs - they can live 15-20 years in captivity.

If you decide to get a lizard I have kept bearded dragons for years and I can give you lots of info on them. They make awesome pets, they are very friendly. Dont go for the water dragons as they are very flighty and will run away at any opportunity - such as u opening their cage to feed them.
Whereas bearded dragons will happily sit in the living room or on the couch with you. You cannot have one if you are scared of bugs tho as this is what they eat. Be prepared to feed live crickets, cockroaches, mealworms etc if you want to keep bearded dragons. They also need vegetables.

    Frogs:

    Green Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea)

The most commonly kept frog in the world and one of the frogs best suited to keeping as a pet. This species requires heating and the provision of artificial ultra-violet light. Their life can exceed 25 years.

    Spotted Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis)

Spotted marsh frog photo by P.RobertsonNo licence is required to keep this attractive and active frog. This species represents an excellent beginners pet and requires no artificial heating. They range in colour from light to dark greens with leopard-like spots of a darker shade of green. They can be expected to live over 5 years

Southern Brown Tree Frog (Litoria ewingi)

Southern brown tree frog photo by P.RobertsonAnother species which can be kept without a wildlife licence, this active climbing frog is an excellent beginner's pet. No artificial heating or lighting is required, and your pet can be expected to live for around 5-8 years.

Jai, I just wanna say I really appreciate how much research you're putting into your new pet. It makes me very proud of you as a friend.

Please do feel free to PM or email me with the Bearded Dragon information

I'm looking for a 'tank' orientated animal that I can also have 'out' every so often for company (even if it was just perched on my shoulder or something). I also need something that isn't noisy and I can easily train other people to look after for me when I travel away from home (for weeks at a time).

I've researched Hermit Crabs. They are a good possibility tho' I don't want to rule out other animals.

The frogs are illegal here in QLD so I won't push my luck there.

I'm not worried about the length of time (usual lifespan) of an animal. Bibs was 14 years old and I was her primary human for most of her life so it won't phase me. I wouldn't mind a longer living animal over a shorter one tho' I'm not fussed at the same time.

Just that I defiantely am an 'animal' person and want to expand my experiences to beyond the 'traditional' of cats and dogs (as much as I can appreciate both of them).

I've built a few, one for a full grown green iguana and another for a 20 foot Burnmese python.

We used pressure treated wood and big honking piano hinges. Plexi is lighter than glass but has a tendency to get scratches/cloudy. Heavy weight screen or even house vent covers are good for ventilation depending on humidity needs etc.
Remember to stay away from cedar. Umm..... Brain has cramped, i'll post more if I can remember specifics.
