Default IUD Questions (for those who have one)

I want to get an IUD as my new birth controll method. I have an appointment with the gyno next week.

Can anyone tell me about the pain level?

They said it can really hurt some women.

Also, have you had any experiences with the strings and men being able to feel the strings during sex?

I have one and haven't experienced any severe pain. I have slight cramping every now and then, but no more than with a normal period. My bf could feel the string a little at first, but your body will naturally adjust where the IUD need to sit. And now it's fine. It wasn't painful for him, just kinda annoying. But different positions can fix that too. I love my IUD though. I barely have a period anymore and I've only had mine for 8 months. I think I spotted for the first 2 months, but not badly. And I'd just had a baby 4 weeks before mine was put in. Definately the best bc decision for me though. I don't have to worry about it.

Are you in a monogamous relationship? I ask cause they don't recomeend it if you are not, no clue why really but this was what I was told.

The pain is minimal, more of it being uncomfortable after being placed but I experianced pain because the antibiotics given to me were given too late so I had a bit of an infection so if you do decide to get it please take them early.

YOu might bleed for a while after, and on sometimes you may go from having 1 period to almost none for a few months, makes it a bit scary at times so I say use other protection if you know your cycle to be extra sure when ovulating.

I coul dfeel the string and it poked me when my husband and i had sex, I went in to the doc and she cut some off cause it was too long. Hubby says he feels it but it doesn't hurt or bother him, or me.

I've had it since 2005 and I love it. The thing is you might get looooong periods or like me I haven't had a period in over a year (but then again until yesterday I was nursing so my hormones are a bit out of well you know)

I hope I answered your concerns

I think they have a site if your getting the mirena one.

I'm not going to lie. When I had mine inserted it hurt like bloody hell. I cramped for a few days afterwards. But it was totally worth it. I don't even know it's there now.

I've never had anyone tell me they felt it but the guy's size might make a difference. Haven't been with anyone really huge since I got it.

The reason they want you to be in a monogamous relationship with an IUD is because it makes it easier for STI's to be transmitted and if you have multiple partners, you will be put at increased risk.

I have the Mirena IUD and aside from the pain and heavy, two months of bleeding I experienced at first - I like it. The insertion wasn't bad at all - I just felt some pinching, pressure, and then cramping. It took about 5 minutes. I did have very heavy cramping and bleeding after the insertion, but every woman is different. I bled for two months after having it put in, but now I only spot every two months with the occasional cramping.

I would recommend the Mirena IUD, though I can't say about the copper.

I'm STILL spotting a bit from mine, going on the fourth month(i think), but my natural period was like that anyways(some but barely any bleeding, that would last for over a week at a time, as many as three weeks)

But I love it. Some positions of sex are uncomfy for me now(though I don't think the boyfriend notices, and I shift and its no longer an issue)

inserting it wasn't PLEASANT... I've had MUCH more painful procedures done... and I only cramped for a few days after, only REALLY badly for one day though...

If you just breathe, you should get through it just fine!

You need to be in a mutually-monogamous relationship because the IUD increases your risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. You should also have had at least one baby. Everyone told me before I got my IUD that I would expel it because I'd never been pregnant. I drove out of state to get one anyway, and sure enough in just over a week it was hanging halfway out my cervix and I had to take Plan B. That was one expensive, painful lesson.

When it was in place, the string poked my ex-husband when we had sex and he didn't like it.

I've got a fairly low pain threshold, so the doctor prescribed Valium for the insertion. About an hour before the insertion, I took a Valium and four Ibuprofen, and it hurt a little but not much. I was fucking STONED, LOL! The removal hurt like hell and I wanted to climb the walls.

Well the Doctor didn't say anything about how I should be a parent already, and I assume he should know those things.

Anyway I will go to Womens Hospital soon to have one put in. I might be waiting a while, who knows with the insurance and stuff...

Anyone else who has had this experience, please tell your story?

If you have not had a child, you will have a hard time having it inserted.

As for sex - yes, my hubby can feel it at times, though it isn't uncomfortable for him at all. If the strings are too long, you can asked to have them trimmed.

Most of the time they'll still do them even if you don't have children, but you do need to moniter it much closer to make sure it doesn't come out. And as Yekhefah said there is a much greater chance when you haven't had a baby before. I think it kinda depends on your body though.

I've had one for 7 years. I have heard the same thing, that if you have not had a child, your body has a higher chance of expelling it.

I love my IUD, my hubby can feel it sometimes, but not painfully, he's just aware of it.

The only bad thing baout my IUD, and this could just be my weird body here, I can't wear tampons anymore. I don't flow very well and between the IUD and the tampon, things get a little "backed up" wich results in TSS. Not cool.

But, pills and shots do not work for me, at all. Two pregnancies with hormonal birth control and lots of sickness.
So the IUD rocks for me. The insertion was a bit uncomfortable, but the cramping and spotting went away in a couple of days. The cramping on my first day of my period is pretty shitty, but again, that could be me.

Not sure about the steril thing. I've never heard anything about it. I do know that when it's removed, you can get pregnant pretty quickly. Tampons are can also be kinda uncomfy for me too, but i think it's just because I really don't bleed much now. My periods are are really light, just basically spotting.

Sort of; like I said, it can make it easier to catch Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, which causes sterility. This is why they tell you that you should only get an IUD if you're in a mutually monogamous relationship, so that there's no risk of getting PID.

I'd never heard about the whole "must have had kids or it will be expelled" thing... I think they make more sizes now, so maybe its not a new thing? Mine was inserted fairly recently, so i'm up on all the information...

I've never had a kid, and I haven't expelled it... The boyfriends never mentioned being aware of it when we do stuff either-though now i want to ask him...(wouldn't THAT be a great question as he's at his grandparents?)

Tampons aren't the MOST comfy-but mainly, thats because my spotty snotty period isn't heavy, and the dry tampon itches like HELL and knocks the flora out of whack down there.

Ah well, I love it. I was put ON this because neither pill nor patch worked well for me-I have extreme nausea, so no pill, and the patch had me breaking out in INSANE amounts of rashing and infection...couldn't try depot provera because i'm already bipolar adn depressive, adn my doctor didn't want to risk me having a dangerous mood swing/psychotic episode on it... not to mention the additional risks of bone thinning problems and such....

My periods lasted 8-10 days and were extra heavy when I had the copper IUD. I never had any pregnancy scares and it never came out. The only reason I got it removed was the periods were driving me crazy! No worries for you my periods have always been longer than others, so I think that you will enjoy the IUD.

I have a Mirena IUD. I love it.

    I've never been pregnant.

If it is inserted with an anesthetic, it is not painful. You might feel a poke, but no unbearable pain. If it is inserted w/o an anesthetic, well ... it might hurt ... A LOT. Believe me, I know!

The first month, I had random period-like cramps. My first period with it was 2 weeks long, mainly a light flow and spotting. Then ... no period ever again!
