    Default Sonoma wine tour ideas

    All,

At the end of a family trip to L.A. this summer, I'm hoping to tack on my first-ever trip to Sonoma. Thinking taking four or five days--Wednesday/Thursday to Sunday.

Any advice? Any recommendations on places to stay (or avoid)? I'll be with friends but, of course, would enjoy meeting any wine-loving SW folks during the trip, if you're in the area.

    Thanks in advance,

I did that about six years ago and it was wonderful! Find the winery that does sparkling wines. They don't do free tastings but they're not too expensive, and you can try different sparkling wines on the patio of this lovely plantation-style home. They also sell these glorious chocolates with wine in the center - IIRC, there was a dark chocolate truffle with cabernet in the center, and a double-chocolate (milk and white) with chardonnay in it. Simply glorious.

I get out there at least twice a year (used to go to school in Sonoma) and my two favorites are "Viensa" and "Gloria Ferrar" which is the one that has the orgasmic choclates with champagne in them.

Consider staying in Healdsburg in northern Sonoma county. A wide range of room options, a fair number of tasting rooms in the town square with lots of quaint shops, and a couple of really good restaurants and one great one - Cyrus. Any particular varietal you prefer? Healdsurg is a good jumping off point for Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley all appellations with good reds. Sonoma wine country is a little more spread out than Napa Valley, and tends to be more laid back and easier to find smaller, less commercial wineries.

So I'm still seeking a good place to stay for three or four nights in Sonoma. Any ideas? (Dirty, the Healdsburg is sold out that week, I think.)
