    Default Ephendrine, I'm Scared!

Ok so sometimes I have slight asthma left over from having it during childhood. I saw my doctor today and he suggested I try over the counter pills like Primatene (OTC asthma pills that have a airway opener along with 15-25 mg of Ephendrine). I picked up a box today and I'm scared to try it. I've heard so many horror stories about it and I'm not even using it for weight loss. I asked for alternatives but he said this was the best way to go as far as OTC. Will I be effected by 25mg-50mg of Ephendrine? I have no idea how much is normally in diet pills.

Edited to add: I HATE uppers. I've never done drugs besides pot but I hate things like caffeine and anything that makes me hyper. Will this make my energy increase like that?

Is there a reason you have to go OTC? Couldn't he prescribe Singulair for you? Much safer, IMO and way more effective.

He said due to how often I have them (not too often) he thought going OTC would be easier and better for me, that I didn't need prescription strength.

Oh ok...but what about just getting Singulair in the inhaler form then? I was not too fond of the effects that this type of med he suggested had on my fiance.

He was jittery and had trouble sleeping. If you don't like caffeine or anything that makes you feel "up", you might have a hard time with this.

Blah that's what I was afraid of. I may hold off on taking these and see if I can get something different.

I would see another Dr. for a second opinion! Although I'm not sure of the mg I had taken..it was 2 pills in a span of 8 hours....oh my fucking God it was awful. I literally thought I was going to die. Had to be taken to the hospital, put on IV, awful! Seems to me there must be a safer way to treat you. Especially if you don't like uppers, this seems like a crazy treatment plan. Best of luck to you!

Well to be fair I didn't tell my doctor "I don't like uppers" lol.

Since when do they prescribe ephedrine for asthma? That's a new one on me. I agree, get a second opinion and ask about Singulair. My asthma is pretty intense so I'm on a daily steroid inhaler, but if you don't get asthma attacks very often you should have an albuterol inhaler and possibly Singulair.

I can't believe he didn't give you an albuterol inhaler though. That worries me. Every asthmatic needs to have albuterol on standby; it can save your life. (Just don't abuse it or then you'll die when you really need it.)

Asthma is a sore subject with me because everyone thinks it's no big deal. It is the NUMBER ONE medical killer of women in our age group. And believe me, it's NOT a pleasant way to die. I came pretty damn close to dying of it a little over a year ago and I wouldn't wish that experience on Yasser Arafat, I really wouldn't. It's horrible. If you have asthma, TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!

For some reason OTC asthma pills have Ephendrine along with the air way opener. I don't know if it makes it work faster or what.

That OTC stuff will kill an asthmatic. Those little inhalers you get will NOT save you in an asthma attack. They might lessen it, but women die all the time from relying on those things. You need albuterol.

Don't want to scare you SC, but this is true.

People die from asthma attacks even with proper medication. Not being able to breathe is something you should take seriously and so should your doctor.

    Get a prescription inhaler, please.

I found some info on ephedrine used to treat mild asthma, if you're interested:

Very true what Yek said--I have asthma , too. There is nothing more frightening than a full-blown asthma attack. I would get another doctor to prescibe an inhaler for you--all you need is a puff if you feel an attack coming on, and it stops it cold. So, no danger that you would overuse it. OTC stuff does fuck-all for actual asthmatics, and just pumps you full of stimulants that do nothing to target the actual inflammation occuring in your airways. See another doctor.

Yeah.. have asthma too and even though it rarely flares up..when it does, the OTC stuff is useless. Your dr should NEVER have recommended it. You need to carry an albuterol inhaler with you.

ephedrine is a decongestant ( i had a drippy nose for a week when i tried it) which is why it was possibly suggested, but i don't see it making a huge difference to an asthmatic, it only cleared my sinuses and nose and not my chest. get yourself a second opinion deary.

Primatene inhalers are evil and should be removed from all pharmacy shelves. I had a dude give himself a STROKE from over using that crap instead of shelling out the bucks to get a real inhaler. If you overuse that stuff, it forces your blood pressure higher and higher. See another doc. If your asthma is that mild, all you need is an albuterol inhaler to keep on hand for the once in a blue moon attack.

Yep, and BTW, don't use your albuterol on a regular basis. If you have to use it more than once or twice a week, or you need it on a long-term basis, then you need to be on a steroid inhaler. No worries though, the steroid inhalers don't have the same nasty side effects as steroid pills. I've been on Flovent for about two years with no problems, other than the time I tried to save money by not using it and winding up blue in the ER.

Boo looks like it's time to either a)find a new doctor or b)have him change his mind. I guess you could classify him as a doctor who uses meds as little as possible.

^^^ Believe me, I love that. I've said on this board many times that way too many doctors are pill-pushers, paid by the pharmaceutical companies to dope us all up as much as possible. I hate drugs. But if you have asthma, you need to have an albuterol inhaler with you at all times. That OTC shit will not help you and could cost your life. Albuterol is a little expensive if you don't have insurance, but you're better off broke than dead.

^^ Don't say something like...I have mild asthma, what should I take? Say - I have mild asthma and I'm out of my albuterol. Can I get a refill? Nobody should bat an eye at it.

My ex-husband took Primatene for his asthma. He particurally took it for energy before he worked out. He said it did give him a "boost". I use to take Albuterol for seasonal asthma and it can also make you feel a little hyper. But the good thing is it goes away fairly quick.

Sorry to get in on this thread a little late, but I had a nasty upper respitory infection a few weeks ago that ended in wheezing and chest tightness. The symptoms were asthma-like. I'd stress over my inability to breathe and it would get worse. The doc put me on an inhaler.

You need Albuterol. Here' a tip: it can make you shaky so wash your mouth out really well after you use the inhaler. I also have this circular inhaler that works better than the standard L-shaped style.

I've also heard of a "breathing treatment" for asthmatics. Ask your doc about that. Hope this helps at this point.

Wow. you girls have me a little concered. I read this thread, ran into ym bedroom and looked at the inhaler my hubby keeps by his bedside.

He uses it maybe once a day, for sure after sex, and on days when we get lots of dust and allergens he uses it a couple of time.
It's the primetene one. I'm positive he hasn't seen a doc about his asthma in years, and is one of those guys who'd rather self medicate than go to a doctor, but is this stuff very bad for him? I'll drag his ass out the door to get a scrip if that's the case.....

    WTH!

you need to get another doc.

singular is probably too much for mild asthma...

i can't believe he didn't give you an rx for an albuteral inhaler! that's about as mild as it gets
