    Default Informal poll about counselors

    Hey ladies,

I'm curious about something. I've been reading the discussions here and really loving learning from y'all.

I am currently a licensed counselor in Texas. It has been a goal of mine for some time to create a sex-positive private practice, for people who work in the adult entertainment industry.

What I envision is simply an open-minded and supportive practice. What this would NOT include would be any kind of moral or religious agenda. I don't consider anyone's job as the source of a problem unless they first state that it is. I just think it might be nice to be able to disclose what you do for a living without any fear of negative reactions.

What do y'all think? Would it be weird for a counselor to approach their practice in this way? What could a counselor do or not do to create a safe environment for you?

My counselor/therapist is the only person I've ever had for more than 3 months (I've been with him for 2 1/2 years), and it's because he doesn't judge what I do. He doesn't try to talk me out of doing my job, and he doesn't try to convince me that my problems stem from my profession. I can talk about anything going on in my life without worrying about how he can spin my problems toward getting me out of the adult biz.

I got really lucky with him, because I had been through more than a dozen other counselors before him. He sits in his rocking chair and actually takes part in the conversation, which is what I need. I can't sit there for an hour and just listen to myself and not have any input, so his approach is wonderful.

It's awesome that you've found someone who you can work so well with. Sometimes it's a real challenge for most counselors to put aside their personal feelings and just do what is best for their clients!
