Default Hate it when this happens...

So I fell for one of my close friends. She's smart, funny, gorgeous, and we get along really well together. And when I drink too much, she lets me crash on her couch. So anyway, I told her that I was falling for her. And now, I regret it. She always says she's looking for a decent guy, but then I'm just a friend. And now, maybe not even that. It's gonna be really awkward. Anyone else have that happen? Falling for a friend and winding up risking a really good friendship because of it?

I don't even know how to run damage control on this one. I'm out of ideas here.

Eh, don't lie. It's not wrong that it happened.

Don't run damage control. Just tell her what's up.

I did, and that's where the problem lies. She's a really close friend of mine now, we're probably closer than I was with my last gf. But I don't want things to get awkward.

I just basically don't know what to do, besides what I already have. And that's what got me in this mess in the first place.

Say something like, "I don't want things to be all awkward now. If you're not into me in that way, just say so and maybe we can pretend this never happened?"

Because sooner or later one of the 2 parties will become attracted to each other (surprise....surprise) and expect more out of the "relationship".

I suppose the only way it could work if it were strictly a working/friend relationship, for example Nick Faldo's caddy was a female and also a good friend of his

Agree. Well, from experience anyway. Unless he's gay or if I grew up with him and see each as family, I can't be friends with a guy. All of the guys i've been friends with wanted to bang me later on in time. Making shit feel awkward. LOLOLL. No thanks. If I wanted that from him, I would've made it known from the beginning.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've noticed women, upon meeting a male, have made up their mind in a millisecond whether or not they ever wanna sleep with him.

Words mean nothing here snowles, you said it, your followup action is what is going to make the situation awkward or not. It doesn't HAVE to be awkward, just relax and act as if nothing happened, but don't try to say it DIDN'T happen either. Show her you feel this way and it's no big deal by acting normal and same as always.

If you act awkward, so will she. In time it will feel natural.

And the problem is that they wait forever to man-up enough to tell you, at which point, they have already been cemented in your mind as a "friend."

I can agree. Unfortunately, men don't like honesty from women. That fragile male ego...."Hope springs eternal."

It works if the in love party just shuts up. Usually they get over it in about 6 months when they realize it won't happen and they can continue happily.

Are you sure you're falling for her? It's probably more a combination of infatuation and lust, which can be confused with love.

If you're really falling in love, then you'll stop at nothing to win her over. It doesn't sound like that.

You probably just want to bang her but as that desire was going through your "nice guy" filter, it came out as "I'm falling for you."

    SEE: Nice Guy Syndrome

The next time you're out together, flirt with her and make subtle passes. If she's totally cold to that idea, I would drop this relationship because it will just frustrate you.

Guys can't be around a hot piece of ass without trying to hit it.

I agree with Lena. Be honest. You said it, and if that's the way it is, you regret it, and you'd like to take it back and just put it out of both your minds. Maybe that won't happen, but maybe this'll be something you laugh about in a couple years. As friends.

And going with the honesty theme, what's with guys and girls can't just be friends? I'm just friends with lots of women. We work together, we laugh together, we party together, we get drunk together, we talk about the ways of the world together, and then we part company till the next time. I'm not talking about an occasional party moment. I'm talking about friendships, and just friendships, that span decades.

Of course a woman and a man can be just friends, if the woman and man are emotionally suited for just friendship.

Thanks for the input, Jay. And everyone else, too.

I think me and her need to just clear the air about the whole issue, then get on with our lives.

I have several male friends that I have known practically my whole life(one since pre-school) and none of us has EVER had a sexual thought of the other cross our minds.

Kinda blows your theory outta the water now doesn't it?

I agree. When male friends tell me stuff like that (obviously I'm not interested or they would have never JUST been a friend in the first place, hehe), I just tell them I'm not interested and wait to see if they get over it or get emo about it. If they get over it and don't bring it up anymore, it's cool. If they keeping whining about it like I'm going to change my mind... I'm minus one friend.
