    Default Red wine?

I don't know much about red wine, but I heard it's good to have a glass or 2 each day. It also helps me sleep. Can anyone suggest a good red wine? I tried merlot and burgundy, I don't really like either one. I want something not too strong or bitter.

Any chiraz! Has this fruity taste to it which I really like. There are a horde of cheap CA wines that you can get at Trader Joes, and often their staff are pretty knowledgeable about them.

I suggest, for an inexpensive, not too dry red wine:

Yellow Tail Shiraz/Grenache blend. Fruity, but not sweet, dry but not tannic. Perfect for sipping and relaxing.

They have lots of blends, but this one is right down the middle. It's got a pinkish-purple label.

Try to get the Shiraz/Grenache blend, not just the Shiraz. A little fruitier and I think it's just what you're looking for.

Brad and I have wanted to try that one but always wind up with an old standard. I'm gonna pick it up this weekend, thanks!

Agreed on the Luna de Luna blends as well.

Agreed about the shiraz and shiraz blends. You might also like a malbec or zinfandel (real zinfandel, not the chilled blush kind teenagers drink)... the zinfandel might be a little aggressive for you but it's got a lovely fruit. I'm a fan of dry wines so I might not be as much help, but I'll try and think of some sweeter reds for you.

I've tried several of them and, though shiraz is my personal favorite, I enjoyed them all.

I too though am a fan of drier wines rather then fruity/sweet....just so you get where my tastes are coming from. If you prefer sweet wine, you prob. wont like the ones I like!

I love drier wines. My fave right now is a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo. A great red wine that kicks ass when you pair it with pasta dishes.

And my all time fave is Chianti.

Chianti...Haven't tried that but someone told me I would like it.

Yek- I love Zin! I just didn't know it was considered red wine, I thought it was all blush! Which brands are red?

I just got back from the store with my Yellowtail Shiraz/Grenache and I'm lovin it!!!

Oh, I'm so glad you like it! I think I'm going to have a glass myself right now!

Yek was talking about Zinfandel, which is red. White Zinfandel is the sweet blush wine you were thinking of.

The only sweet wine I will drink is Port or Ice Wine as an after dinner drink. It's very sweet/syrupy and very strong. You only drink a tiny glass of it after dinner.

There is "white zinfandel," which is a very sweet blush wine served cold. It tends to be pretty popular with teenagers, due to the fact that it tastes like alcoholic Kool-Aid. I drank it up when I was 17 but can't stand it now; it's much too sweet.

Zinfandel, OTOH, is a really fruity red wine with a slightly higher alcohol content than most wine. Zins tend to be pretty aggressive but have a lot of complexity. They don't go too well with food but they do go nicely with fruit, bread, and cheese. Most of them come from California; zin grows really well in the wine country up north, so many California wineries produce it. I like Ravenswood, personally.

I think I've actually had the Ravenswood Zin. IIRC, we drank it with pecan crusted brie and raspberry sauce.

That sounds lovely! I don't really care for brie but with pecans, raspberry sauce, and Ravenswood Zin, it couldn't be too bad!

Uuhhh... nobody pointed out that two glasses a day is considered alcoholic?

I recommend Shiraz, it's my favourite. But two glasses a WEEK are good for you, clinically.

Not discouraging the red wine, just mentioning that it DOES have a lot of chemicals (natural food chemicals) which can affect your mood and so on, so if you drink it every day and find yourself unexplainably moody or feeling a little off you might want to back off on the wine. 2 glasses a day would have me feeling perpetually hung over.

Also the sulfites in red wine can give you a major headache, it did me everytime and sometimes from just one glass.

You can also dilute the wine with filtered water. That way you can have just 1/2 glass and fill the rest up with water/tonic. Not too much, and it seems like more visually.

I'd be smashed all the time on 2 glasses of wine nightly. I have a freakishly low tolerance for alcohol.

OK so I looked it up and it seems that every source says the exact same thing...heart healthy benefits of red wine...one glass per day for women, two glasses per day for men. 1 glass=4 ounces of wine.

The French are some of the healthiest people on the planet and they drink red wine every day from childhood onward. I think it depends on your tolerance. I don't have it every day, but I have a glass NEARLY every day. One glass after dinner is good for you. Just don't go berserk.

Watch if you have a family history of breast cancer though---alcohol consumption can increase breast cancer risk in women predisposed to the disease.
